5. so does mine...
I Google mapped the intersections and it looks like the twisters were only about three miles west of her house. The article says no injuries though, and just structural damage to properties. Called--got only her answering machine!

A huge storm system featuring at least three tornado touchdowns moved in a northeastern path across the Twin Cities metro area Sunday afternoon, causing a long path of damage, especially in north Minneapolis and nearby areas.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak asked people to stay away from north Minneapolis so emergency vehicles and residents could respond to extensive damage to homes and buildings. Toppled trees blocked many streets.

n north Minneapolis, the Broadway Liquor Outlet at the corner of Penn Avenue and Broadway Avenue was hit hard, with all the windows blown out and the roof apparently gone. Houses were missing roofs and debris filled yards and streets as hundreds of residents milled about after the storm passed through. A traffic light was toppled at the intersection, street signs were bent and telephone poles were snapped in half.

The havoc began about 2 p.m., when a tornado touched down in St. Louis Park during severe thunderstorms that featured heavy downpours and hail. At the Good Day Cafe in Golden Valley, customers were moved into the kitchen area for shelter. At the Nestle plant in St. Louis Park and surrounding areas, evacuations were underway due to a natural gas leak....

Tornado hits N. Minneapolis; 1 killed

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - At least one person died when a tornado hit Minneapolis on Sunday, damaging scores of homes, toppling hundreds of trees and leaving 18 people with minor injuries.

City spokeswoman Sara Dietrich said the death was confirmed by the Hennepin County medical examiner. She had no other immediate details.

Tornado warnings and watches had been issued Sunday evening throughout parts of the central U.S. In Missouri, authorities said a tornado hit a Joplin hospital and caused the roofs of two city fire stations to collapse. Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer said a tornado hit the St. John's Regional Medical Center and that there are multiple reports of injuries.

In Minneapolis, the 18 people who were hurt were treated at North Memorial Hospital, and spokeswoman Wendy Jerde said the injuries were not serious. The metro area's other two trauma centers, Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and Regions Hospital in St. Paul, reported no injuries.

10. There are at least 2 being reported as fatalities (if not at least a couple more) on the....
...Emergency Services stream. The code "J4" (and occasionally "DOA") is being used to reference fatalities. Per this guide.

11. The damage where the tornado hit is pretty spectacular
in the negative sense of the word (as in the awesome power of nature). I have friends where the tornado hit pretty hard. One had 4 trees down on his house, another lost 1/4 of her roof, so water was pouring in, basically. I tried to go down to check on them, and got to within a couple blocks but couldn't go farther.

10 blocks north where I live there was no damage whatsoever.

One of the charming aspects of north Minneapolis is the old, mature trees, well, was. A nice park in that area that had lots of mature evergreens and deciduous trees lost 1/4 to 1/3 of the trees, I estimate. Sad, in addition to the property damage, and seemingly also loss of life.

At least 24 dead in Joplin tornado

A large tornado that struck Joplin in southwest Missouri and hit a hospital, has killed 24 people, the Springfield News-Leader is reporting.

<snip>

In Joplin, extensive damage has been reported on the south side of the city and along Rangeline Road, a major commercial thoroughfare in the city.

The tornado struck Joplin at about 5:45 p.m., according to reports transmitted to the Springfield branch of the National Weather Service. St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin was severely damaged, and scanner traffic indicated emergency responders from surrounding communities are converging on the city to assist with victims.

"This is really bad," one Joplin resident relayed to a family member in Andover via text message.

13. I lost my last mature tree. Damage in my suburb north of North Mpls was confined
Fairly small area, my neighbor has major roof damage, 4 to 5 houses on my block tooks hits from trees. Power is out, I'm running on a generator and a oddly working phone line, considering it's almost on the ground and the power pole at the end of the block is laying on a garage. I'm about ready to drop, 5 hours of branch hauling took it's toll. Three blocks away, they only got rain.

A deadly funnel cloud, dark as night, plunged from a rainy afternoon sky Sunday and left a large part of North Minneapolis a shambles.

One person was killed and more than two dozen were injured.

Scores more were left homeless as the tornado hopped and skipped block to block, pushing trees into houses, snapping utility poles, zipping off roofs, ripping up natural gas lines and wreaking havoc over an area roughly four miles square.

"Your heart just sinks," Mayor R.T. Rybak sighed after viewing the area by helicopter. "It's a swath of human tragedy, not just a picture."
