Solar Blast From The Sun To Hit Earth In Next 24 Hours
Edited on Tue Jun-07-11 10:37 PM by Poll_Blind
Source: NASA/Newsroom America

The Sun unleashed a medium-sized solar flare on June 7 which will hit Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of June 8th or June 9th, NASA said late Tuesday.

"The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface," it said in a statement.

NASA said the coronal mass ejection (CME) should deliver a "glancing blow" to Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of June 8th or June 9th.

High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras when the CME arrives.

3. Laugh, but it never hurts to keep a few weeks of canned groceries
in the house. We had a hurricane where they shut off the pipe lines. Stores went closed in hours.

not really meaning to hijack this doomsday dirge, but a good office space reference simply cannot go to waste.

15. Very cool! NASA had a couple of animated GIFs of this thing tearing off but...
...my faves were from SOHO (?), which had the best views of the ejecta cascading back into the atomic roil...

17. No; 'medium-sized', 'a glancing blow' in the OP; 'minimal impact' in later reports
A solar flare has erupted from the sun in an impressive display captured by NASA cameras, but scientists say the medium-sized event will have a minimal impact, if any, on Earth.

The flare peaked early on Tuesday and created a large cloud that appeared to cover almost half the surface of the sun, NASA said.

A cloud of charged particles erupted from the sun's outer atmosphere and is expected to pass by Earth late Wednesday or early on Thursday, causing a minor disruption to Earth's magnetic field, according to the National Weather Service's Space Weather Prediction Center

'This wasn't really such a big event,' said Michael Hesse, chief of the space weather laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

'It was spectacular to watch, but not big in terms of hazards to the Earth.'

22. I saw that movie
It didn't end well. Nicholas Cage was in it but I am too lazy to Google the flick.

I'm at a high altitude so maybe I'll sleep outside tonight and see if there is a light show.
