Women can't keep breast implants for life: FDA
Source: Reuters

Women who get silicone breast implants are likely to need additional surgery within 10 years to address complications such as rupturing of the device, U.S. health regulators said on Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration will work to revise safety labels for silicone breast implants after reviewing data from several long-term studies, which also showed that the products had a small link to a rare form of cancer.

The agency said the studies overall confirmed its decision that implants can be used safely, but noted the conclusions could be limited because some women dropped out.

-cut--

From 1997 to 2010, there were about 60 cases of ALCL reported for women worldwide out of about 5 million to 10 million women who had breast implants, Shuren said.

I'd say that 60 out of 5 million is indeed very, very rare, wouldn't you?

5. Stupid.
I still can't comprehend how any number of women will subject themselves to this for anything other than reconstructive reasons.

13. I'm from Orange County so I see plenty of it
Several of the women I work with have them in varying degrees of ridiculousness. I dated a woman who had them but it wasn't obvious.

One of the women I work with has major buyers remorse because all these things really accomplished was making it look like she put on a ton of weight.

8. Women are taught from cradle to grave
that if they are not "hawt", they are useless and invisible.

Women have the surgery because they believe it's what the men in their lives want.

23. I suspect you are wrong. Implant removal is NOT a procedure paid for by Medicaid...
unless cancer is involved. For many uninsured women, it is Planned Parenthood that pays for breast tissue biopsies to diagnosis breast cancer in women who have implants - not Medicaid. Medicaid will NOT pay for biopsies nor removal of implants unless there is cancer present, and then removal is most often limited to the one affected breast and not the other.

Your suspicions are outta whack, fella, and what's sad about your subject line is that some people will read it only and go away thinking what you "suspect" must be true.

JHC on a crutch anyway.

7. title seems misleading - indeed, you DO have them for life
in the Terry Pratchett aphorism sense, at least:
"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day.
Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."

10. Those things begin to deteriorate....
I'm taking Radiography and the lady who lectured in our mammo class said those need replacing usually in 7 years, then proceeded to show us MRIs of degraded implants.

Oh, and ladies, if you buy your boobies save up for MRIs instead of getting mammograms. Regular mammo is virtually useless on an augmented breast.

14. Women I know who had them are generally happy with them.

A few said they always wanted larger breasts. All are used to seeing men's heads turn when a woman with larger breasts comes into sight. So, the inadequacy, or the envy, is communicated to them by men unconsciously.

Unfortunately, like most cosmetic products, breast enhancement doesn't have the entire effect women think it does, aside from some initial extra attention from men. Males will check them out just long enough to determine that the breasts are fake, and then immediately lose interest. Often, though, that's enough for the extra psychological affirmation women think they want. Therefore they'll feel an added self-esteem.

The surgeries, though, can involve risks and complications, especially when subsequent surgeries are needed, and as this study says, they often are.

One might blame male desires for this, along with the commercial media for manipulating male desires. However, this isn't as one sided as it looks. Men's physical desires tend to be very stereotypical. Breasts, behinds, legs an hourglass shape. Women's physical desires for males are all over the map. You can't really come up with an ideal physical form for hetero women. However, where males do suspect physically desired stereotypes from women, you see that they are just as desperate and needful as women are about cosmetic surgery or makeup. That's why you penis enhancement and baldness cures/treatments are billion dollar industries. Whereas breast enhancement is at least not shameful in society, penis enhancement is regarded as absolutely pathetic.

16. Inflatables are high maintenance body parts
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 07:01 AM by marions ghost
--and who needs more of those?

Someday we'll think of these breast implants like the bound feet of Chinese women. (Or the practices of the genital mutilation societies). A form of self-mutilation in order to achieve a dubious attractiveness. Nothing looks sillier than women taking "them out for a walk" on the boardwalk, but they think they look so hot with their obvious inflatables. Sad. The popularity of breast implants is a sad comment on women's feelings of inadequacy in this hyper-sexed society where the need to advertise is huge. (The movie "Idiocracy" takes this to the nth).

Anyway there are (actually) men who don't care about big breasts. And women who don't think they look bad with small breasts. Celebrate differences anyone?

17. It's like a water bed
The bladder or bag or tubes eventually wear out and leak. If you sleep on a water bed, you will eventually wake up in a wet spot. Same would be reasonable to assume for implants.

19. you probably don't want them when you get to be an old
lady anyway. there are few things more yucky and sad than old plastic surgery on a 70 year old. especially that lip collagen, when your top lip starts to hang down over your bottom lip. i don't usually diss women's looks, but to me it screams PATHETIC.
