Indianapolis StarA federal judge is ordering that Indiana not enforce two provisions of a state immigration law that was scheduled to take effect on July 1.
The law, once a get-tough Arizona-style immigration bill, was already watered down significantly amidst opposition by lawmakers and community groups.
The two provisions that U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker has ordered not be enforced are: (1) the law's prohibition of the use of ID cards issued by foreign consulates, even though the Treasury allows banks to accept them, and (2) a provision allowing local police to arrest immigrants whose immigration status has been questioned by federal authorities, even if those authorities have determined that the person should be able to remain in the country.
The judge's injunction lasts for the duration of the case, which will determine whether or not the law should be allowed to stand.
