BP argues Gulf recovery so strong that future loss claims should end
Source: AP / Toledo Blade

NEW ORLEANS -- BP is arguing that victims of last year’s Gulf oil spill should not be paid any more claims for future losses because the areas affected by the spill have recovered and the economy is improving.

The British oil company makes its case in a 29-page document filed with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which administers the $20 billion fund for victims.

It criticizes several aspects of the fund’s policies and claims that at some times it has paid victims more than is allowed under the federal Oil Pollution Act.

“Multiple lines of evidence demonstrate that, to the extent that portions of the Gulf economy were impacted by the spill, recovery had occurred by the end of 2010, and that positive economic performance continues into 2011, with 2011 economic metrics exceeding pre-spill performance,” the BP document said.

10. now lookie here. they set 22 billion dollars aside to deal with any losses
suffered by joebob and his cousins no matte where on the gulf they are or were. Since they haven't paid that out to date BP figures

there are no more claims and they can divvy that money up between the CEO and his minions.

Screw joebob and his cousins.

I wonder if you can still take a shovel and scrape the first 6 inches of sand off the beaches and find oil, or if you can take a pic of it if you do?

15. I'm afraid to eat gulf seafood
Before the spill, I used to buy prawns from Louisiana (prawns = my favorite food in the world!). The place I was buying them from still sells them and claims what they are selling is "safe" whatever that means.

I can't trust any seafood from the gulf. The spill was too big and massive and the long-term effects of it haven't even begun to be seen IMO.

It makes me sad, yes it does.

I have lots of kin from Louisiana and I'd sure like to continue to support their seafood industry but I cannot. :(

:kick: & recommend.

NOAA warns of sick fish with lesions and discolored skin in Gulf — LSU scientist studying problem “very worried”
May 31st, 2011 at 05:19 PM

NOAA confirms sick fish in Gulf, Pensacola News Journal, May 25, 2011:

<...> for the first time warning anglers that some fish are sick and may pose health problems if handled or eaten raw.

The agency is telling anglers to toss fish that have lesions, fin rot or discolored skin back into the Gulf and to be careful about handling them. <...>

Jim Cowan Jr., a Louisiana State University Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences scientist studying the sick fish:

For months, fishermen and scientists have been finding sick fish from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Panama City.
Lesions on red snapper found within 20 miles of Orange Beach, Alabama were infected with the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus and Photobacterium damselae. Photobacterium damselae could be responsible for a massive fish loss and can pose serious health problems for humans.
“I’m very worried because I’ve talked to both commercial and recreational fishermen who have been in the business 30 to 40 years and no one has seen anything like this.”

A lot of dead dolphins continue to wash ashore along the Gulf Coast and now a lot of sea turtles — most of them rare Kemp's ridleys — are washing up dead too, federal officials said Thursday.

<SNIP>
About 15 of the 153 dolphins that have washed ashore since Jan. 1 — including one that showed up two weeks ago — were coated in oil. On eight of those, laboratory tests verified that it came from the BP spill that began a year ago this month, federal officials say.

22. Every time an Oil company is quoted there should be a disclaimer that they usually lie.
How many times does it have to be proven that they lied in the past before it's mentioned? If they can't say "lie" then they should at least say that past claims have usually turned out to be false.
