'Five dead' at Texas skating rink party shooting
Source: BBC News

At least five people have been killed and three injured in a shooting at a roller-skating rink birthday party in Texas, police say.

The shooting happened after an argument erupted at the party in the city of Grand Prairie, close to Dallas.

The gunman is among the dead, having shot himself after opening fire on fellow guests, police say.

Details about the incident are sketchy but police say the row was a "domestic disturbance between husband and wife".

"It appears to be a domestic situation, at this point," Reuters news agency quoted police spokesman Steve Dye as saying. "That is our initial finding. And it appears the suspect did die from a self-inflicted gun wound."

6 dead, 4 injured in Texas roller rink shooting
AUSTIN, Texas | Sun Jul 24, 2011 1:15am EDT

(Reuters) - A gunman opened fire at a family birthday party at a North Texas roller rink late on Saturday, killing five people and wounding four others before turning the gun on himself, police said.

The incident began when an unidentified man drew a gun during an argument at a birthday party at the rink. He opened fire, shooting five people dead and wounding four others, and then shot himself, Brimmer said.

~snip~
Five police officers were on the scene within a minute, Brimmer said. The wounded were taken to a local hospital for treatment, although their condition was not immediately known.

A private family group had rented the entire skate rink for the evening to celebrate a child's birthday, Brimmer said. All the dead and wounded were teenagers and adults attending the gathering.

2. I work near there.
Freaky!

Very sad, I'm glad none of the children were involved.

3. Bizarre article...
Ok...how they go from the Vietnamese family gathering horror/shooting in Grand Prairie to referring to the Fort Hood shooting and bringing up how the Ft Hood shooter was Muslim in the same brief article is beyond me. I could see if this all happened in the same CITY or if both murderers were Muslim or both Vietnamese or if there was any other connection between the two besides both happened in the same (huge) state...

Just got home and saw the local headlines. How horrible for all involved!

7. I can't see what you saw in the article
There's 1 sentence:

"It is not clear what motivated the attacker but some reports said the gunman, a US-born Muslim, was unhappy about being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan."

but I can't see anything in that, or other, reports about a Vietnamese family, or Fort Hood. And the 'last updated' time was before you posted.

The shooter was described as a Christian Fundamentalist extremist. Somebody's not telling us the truth.

20. From the articles I've read religion had nothing to do with this
It was a domestic dispute turned shooting.

24. I had just meant that the BBC article was really stretching it
Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 01:47 PM by rainbow4321
to have the two shootings mentioned in the same article...that they had picked a totally unrelated reference point in bringing up the Ft Hood shooting in an article that was supposed to primarily be about the domestic shooting. The only thing in common between the two situations is that they happened in the same state a year or so apart...no other similiarities..different everything (motive, ethnicity, etc...).
Just crappy journalism, IMHO in a crappy, hastily written article.

17. Having said that, the BBC article has changed again, but they haven't changed 'last updated' time
which is piss poor of them. They've removed the "US-born Muslim" sentence, but are trying to make it look like they haven't changed it. Which looks like covering up their own mistakes.

Leaving out the Ft Hood shooting reference, looks like, and re-wrote it the way that they should have done in the first place!

30. I've complained to the BBC they're lying with their update times
It's annoying that they update the stories at the same URL without old versions being retrievable; but if the have a 'last updated' stamp that is false, it's real 'down the memory hole' stuff.

19. Here's the story from the Dallas Morning News
http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/grand-prairie/headlines/20110723-6-dead-4-injured-in-shooting-at-grand-prairie-roller-rink.ece

GRAND PRAIRIE — Six people were killed and at least four were injured in a mass shooting during a family birthday party at a Grand Prairie roller rink Saturday evening.

The shooting at Forum Roller World, 1900 S. Great Southwest Parkway, occurred when a family member drew a pistol during what apparently started as a fight between a husband and wife, police Chief Steve Dye said.

The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“It was an argument. The shooter had gotten into here at a private birthday party,” said John Brimmer, Grand Prairie police spokesman. “It escalated to the point where he pulled a gun and started shooting.”

The ages and identities of the victims were not released Saturday evening. The victims were Vietnamese, Brimmer said. None were children.
-snip-

There is a large Vietnamese population there in Grand Prairie/Arlington.

31. The business should have put out a 30.06 sign.
"Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (trespass by holder of license to carry a concealed handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (concealed handgun law), may not enter this property with a concealed handgun"

That would have stopped him.

...because someone who was willing to murder five people would not have risked being asked to leave by the property owner. ( There is no penalty for a CHL entering a 30.06 area if you agree to leave when asked.)

25. He killed his estranged wife and most if not all of her family
Killed his wife, her 2 sisters (one of whom was 16 yrs old), her brother, and her sister-in-law). How horrific. The surviving children of the killer and his now dead wife are with relatives. Doesn't say how old those children are but I imagine they will be scarred for a long time to come. The birthday party was for one of them so this happened on or around one of their birthdays. :(

26. Man shot estranged wife, her family at roller rink (AP via San Jose Mercury-News)

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas—A gunman shouted at the children to leave his son's birthday party at a Texas roller rink before fatally shooting his estranged wife and four of her relatives and then killing himself as others panicked and some fled screaming in their skates, police and witnesses say.

Police said the couple had been having ongoing marriage problems that investigators believe led to the shootings about 7 p.m. Saturday at Forum Roller World in Grand Prairie, about 20 miles west of Dallas. No young children or rink employees were killed. Some people at nearby businesses said they watched as adults and children spilled from the rink in horror ...

Grand Prairie detective John Brimmer identified the gunman as Tan Do, 35, of Grand Prairie, and said the party was for his 11-year-old son. Do ordered the children to leave the party, and then after they ran and hid, he opened fire, Brimmer said. Do's son and his other child are safe with other relatives, he said.

Do killed his estranged wife, Trini Do, 29, of Grand Prairie, three of her siblings and her sister-in-law, Brimmer said in a statement Sunday. He identified the others as Trini Do's sisters, Lynn Ta, 16, and Michelle Ta, 28; her brother, Hien Ta, 21; and her sister-in-law, Thuy Nguyen, 25 ...
