PayPal boycott chops $1 billion off eBay stock value in mere hours

Following the announcement of a boycott by hacktivist groups "Anonymous" and "LulzSec," shares in PayPal parent company eBay plunged by over $1 billion in value before perking back up as opportunistic investors bought into the company in hopes of a deal.

The boycott, popularized by the "#OpPayPal" hashtag on Twitter, called for PayPal users to close their accounts. It was launched in response to the company's refusal to send donations to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks.

PayPal suspended all transactions headed toward WikiLeaks last year, in the weeks following their groundbreaking publication of secret U.S. diplomatic cables. MasterCard, Visa and Bank of America followed suit shortly thereafter, freezing the majority of WikiLeaks' funds.

In response, the anti-secrecy site pointed out that PayPal still accepts donations for the Ku Klux Klan hate group, and a group connected to the mass murderer in Oslo, Norway.

3. I have told people for years that I will not do business with PayPal. They don't get it.

I'm hoping that some of this publicity sinks in a little and reduces the amount of flack I get for being so "inconvenient" to do business with.

By the way... Is DU still processing its donations through PayPal?

I've been sending checks for quite a while now, so I don't know.

7. PayPal is some kind of mafia organization

they used every trick in the book to scam me when I was in their clutches.

They used to send me a printed paper invoice which was totally different from their online/electronic invoice (different due dates, different charges, ect.) I believe it was deliberately done to confuse me into making the incorrect payments at the wrong time, primarily to create a window of opportunity for additional late fee penalties.

Ebay also jacked up their seller fees considerably last year.

I'll never do business with ebay or PayPal again.

if you are still using Paypal and by extension, aiding others to use it, then you do not support the boycot. You may agree with it, but you are not supporting it.

this is a case where i actually like the service provided but would prefer something else .
