Ford recalls 1.2m F-series pick-up trucks
Source: BBC News

Ford is recalling 1.2 million pick-up trucks in the United States and Canada because of fears their fuel tanks could fall off and start fires.

The recall affects some versions of the F-150, F-250 and Lincoln Blackwood trucks built between 1997 and 2004 - in certain cold-weather states.

It is feared the straps holding the tanks on can be corroded by road salt.

Ford will advise owners with the affected vehicles to take them to a dealer to have the straps replaced.

12. Exactly what I was thinking.
There was thread upon thread of outrage here when it was a Toyota recall. When it's Ford there's nothing.

21. There is no need to
ford is the one who initiated this where as TOYota, that you're referring back too, didn't. In fact TOYota fought their recall on the sudden acceleration if my memory serves me right. Fought it tooth and nail.

2. Everything on a vehicle wears out faster in cold-weather states...
Even so, it's not a good idea to build a truck that loses its gas tank before it loses it fenders.

9. Be cautious.
If your Taurus has disk brakes in the rear, the mild-steel brackets that
hold the rubber hoses leading to the rear brake calipers corrode and
as they corrode and the metal swells, it will eventually pinch shut the
brake line hoses. When that happens, the rear brakes will stick in the
applied position. (There's plenty of hydraulic pressure to push brake
fluid into the caliper but very little force to get brake fluid back out
of the caliper.)

It happened on both sides of my '95 Taurus.

It's a clear design defect; the brackets should have been made of
non-corroding metal.

7. Fords are good nowadays
Maybe in the past they were crappy, but nowadays they are a pretty darn good brand.

8. I'm happy with my 2008 F-150
runs really good, although 21mpg with the "Essex" 4.2l 6-cylinder is not the best you can do with that size of a motor.

I suppose in the future one will see electric f-150s on the road.

18. I really like the new Taurus sedan.
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 01:54 PM by Adsos Letter
Edited to add: Sure wasn't happy with our now ex-1996 Taurus wagon, though. The interior trim really didn't last well, and went through 2 automatic transmissions in 180,000 miles. Maybe it was made on a Friday or Monday?

It did have the special 200hp motor, which I liked.

I admit to being partial to Chevy; my 2001 Silverado has over 200,000 miles on it, with very little trouble (I follow the oil changes and services religiously). Before that, my S-10 had well over 400,000 miles on it before my wife asked if I was ever going to replace it. :D

13. Meh....
This is not uncommon in states that use salt in winter. The key is,Pay attention to the condition of your vehicle. Maintenance is more than filling the tank once a week.... I replaced the fuel tank straps on my 95 Ford Ranger over five years ago. The old ones were looking pretty rusty, but I caught the problem during a once over visual inspection....Oh...My Honda Accord, has rust holes in the body too. This isn't something that only affects certain brands of cars, people need to keep an eye on their vehicles.
