Obama urges Geithner to stay as Treasury chief
Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 12:30 PM by Fearless
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama has asked Timothy Geithner to stay on as Treasury Secretary and a decision is expected soon, officials said on Thursday.

Geithner had indicated he might decide to leave once a decision to raise the U.S. debt limit was raised, which happened this week after a long and rancorous debate. He has headed Treasury since January 2009 and been involved in all the major economic decisions by the Obama administration.

{snip}

If Geithner did leave, the Obama administration would have to find a successor willing and able to withstand a confirmation process that would likely become another battle between Democrats and Republicans over the direction of the nation's economic policy.

Looks like someone sees the sinking ship and wants to get off. Good riddance.

2. It is natural not to want such a serious change in the middle of
the stream. Think about it. Who would the TP approve.

Geithner has often pressed for the right measures.
Just because Congress does not respond, does not
mean Geithner was wrong. Geithner asked for larger
stimulus, and a second stimulus. He was right.
Deficit Hawks were wrong. History will bear this
out.

Be careful what you wish for.

3. I'm sure Obama can find another slimy bankster to take his place
Unbelievably there are rumors that he will offer the job to former Goldman Sachs CEO Jon Corzine.

Guess he couldn't talk Hank Paulson or Robert Rubin into taking it.

9. You could do worse than Corzine.
I saw a press release earlier stating he would not be leaving his current post as CEO of MF Global.

7. Doubling down on failure
This president has a penchant for doubling down on failure. Extending Afghanistan so that the corrupt government can leach us for more money. Declaring that gulf oil drilling is safe, just before the largest oil spill. Backing nuclear power just before Japan's mess. Now he wants to keep Geithner because a double dip recession will be so much fun. What, the bankers didn't get enough bonuses?
