Roseanne Barr to run for US President
Source: RTE

Roseanne Barr says she is going to run for President of the US. The Emmy award-winning actress revealed her ambitions during the taping of last night's Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

"I'm running for President of the United States," said the controversial star to a cheering audience and a grinning Leno. Barr, who subsequently affirmed that she was "totally serious", follows such other Hollywood celebrities on the political trail as Donald Trump (who has since dropped out), Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Barr explained her reasons to a Tonight Show insider. "'Cause I want to be part of the debates, because I want to represent the tax payer. In fact, I'm choosing the tax payers as my vice president."

The actress and comedienne went on to tell Leno that she would not running as a Democrat or a Republican. "I'm not for either party because they both suck and they're both a bunch of criminals," she said. "So I made up my own party. It's the Green Tea Party."

90. Not to mention the impossible task of ballot access -- with a new party
Edited on Fri Aug-05-11 01:39 PM by AikidoSoul
It is seriously daunting. If you've ever read Ballot Access News or checked in with Richard Winger who has been its director for many years, you would realize how fixed this game really is. But then, most DUers would have no problem with the idea of the game being fixed. It may be impossible to create a viable third party.

:-(

Edit to add the word "director"

108. It is simply not possible to create a viable 3rd party...
...for any length of time in the United States. With a winner take all system and no parliament that allows for coalition building, we are just not set up for it. Very rarely it is possible that a 3rd party could rise as an existing party collapses, but that new 3rd party would simply become the 2nd of our 2 party system.

People need to let the 3rd party stuff go, it isn't going to happen.

Hate to say it, but our model is basically what the 'baggers are doing. Take over a party from within and inherit its existing infrastructure.

121. Democrats and Republicans have joined hands many times to make it harder
for a third party candidate to get on the ballot.

"Hate to say it, but our model is basically what the 'baggers are doing. Take over a party from within and inherit its existing infrastructure."

System is rigged against that too, though.

But, if you figure out a way to do it, please pm me.

133. Well, the baggers are doing it.
"But, if you figure out a way to do it, please pm me."

Just follow the teabagger model. They are taking over the Republican party from within. Listen to Thom Hartmann talk about how they are doing it. It's working for the baggers, why shouldn't progressives take over the Democratic party in the same way?

17. She's pretty liberal and for the average person. And I doubt she's the type to get
talked over. I think she would at the very least be great to have on the talking head shows where the liberal side is always under- and poorly represented, provided she can back up her feelings on subjects with good info.

21. Ah, more politcal theater and sideshows...
...not that this hasn't helped us immensely in distracting the media from the actual issues. Yes, what we need is a shock-style mouthpiece for the liberal set to create a fair and balanced appearance in the media 'discourse'.

Nothing against Roseanne, per se. But she hasn't done anything entertainment oriented of any note lately. A little stand-up from what I've seen. Don't be surprised if this is just a PR stunt to give a boost to a flagging career.

But he still works. Is it not at least a non-trivial possibility that she wants to work a little more high profile than she is currently? You say that like it's inconceivable people work for the love of the work.

If she's serious, then good for her, I'm on board. If she's not, I'll thank her for taking an already stupid political climate and making it more so, probably to the detriment to the serious players who already have a hard enough time getting a little face time with the public.

134. She has a show on Lifetime Roseanne's Nuts - she bought a macadamian nut
farm/ranch and the show is about she and her husband and their over-the-top drama about the little things in life. Her son is actually the cool one in the family. He's laid back and wry as hell. It's okay, and is the first reality show I've watched. I wanted to see what she is like now and she seems drugged, hazy. She goes ape shit over the little things. Her husband seems to be a cool dude too. Neat place she has though.

Carnival sideshows aren't debate. The left complains about the "political theater" on the MSM all of the time. It's just another pointless distraction from talking about real issues and solutions to those issues. How is this any different? Oh. She's liberal. That makes stupid OK. We'll just call it satire and pretend its a little brainier than a good crotch-grab.

...the world. Our image is already tarnished...thanks to GWB and the Tea Party. This just adds to it and makes us appear dysfunctional. We are trying to convince other countries that democracy is a good idea...not easy when our image seems ridiculous.

...I remember Reagan. ;) My point is not about her being an actor or a comedian. It's that the field of potential nominees...so far...doesn't seem serious. Donald Trump???Bachmann or Palin? Rosanne is probably more intelligent than those three put together.

BUT...is this the best and brightest??? We should be able to do MUCH better, IMO.

96. It's not because she's a comedian...
It's because there is a smell to this as though there might be a personal PR agenda in play. As I said to the other poster, if she is serious, then good, fine, awesome in fact. But I will use my FSM-given right to be skeptical until I see some proof of seriousness. Because if she is being less than serious about this, then she's just a distraction in a time where liberal thought already gets little enough airtime, and to have it seen as buffoonish (which is likely if she isn't serious) is just going to add to the problem we already have.

49. I'd support her because I have spent time with her personally
during politically 'interesting' times and know her to be righteous, informed, intelligent and fully stocked with courage. Although she has a reputation as being demanding, her demands sought quality, and always went up the ladder. No one I have had contact with in my professional life is more aware of and thoughtful towards others of lesser status. A generous person, in the truest sense of the word. Also, she's so quick of wit that she would be great in debates.
I can say to DU that being with her during Bush related horrors was much like being with DUers during such times. Only funnier.

My personal, actual, face to face opinion of her is about as good as an opinion of mine about another person can get. She is far more than her TV image. And I can tell you that, personally, from me to you. One degree of separation. For what that's worth.

I always got that vibe from Roseanne.

She has been divorced as many times as Newt, she's a better actor than Reagan, a better rancher than W. and funnier than Palin or Bachman...who don't try to be funny but can't help it.

Probably has magic underware from growing up in Salt Lake that could match Romney's magic undies story for story.

And seriously, would you really want to piss her off if she was Commander in Chief?

Picture Roseanna and Texas Governor and likely soon to be candidate, Rick Perry in a debate. Roseanne would fu@# him up.

59. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together can fix the economy
Bill Clinton presided over the biggest peacetime expansion of our economy in history. His plan was simple: TAX THE RICH.

Roseanne's rich. Somehow, I don't think she'd mind paying a little more so some single mom with three kids and working two jobs might have things a bit easier.

Ending the three wars might go a long way to fixing that economy as well. We're burning half a million dollars a minute that we KNOW about.

117. Go Roseanne!
I joked about her as a celebrity that could kick some serious tea party ass a couple of days ago in some "primary Obama" thread, had no idea she would run though.

I've seen her talk politics a number of times on the tube and she's impressed me. She speaks her mind and has an unguarded honesty to her thinking and speaking that cuts right through all of the crap we're supposed to accept as conventional wisdom. I'd vote for her over Obama in the primary if she was running as a Dem.

Still hoping for a serious and unowned candidate to primary Obama from the left, someone who will expose these center-right policies for the unimaginative products of corporate greed that they are. If no such person steps forward, maybe Roseanne can help explain liberal policies in a simple, direct and unapologetic message that might connect with the unconverted.

is that we keep electing corporate whores posing as R or D. What? She could do worse? Really????? I'd vote for her not because she's a "nice woman" and "she's funny" but because she's highly intelligent and she's politically astute. I like the straightforward manner in which she speaks and with her, you'd never get a bait-and-switch pol like we did with Obama. Sorry, but I don't see a damned thing wrong with any of that.

Edited on Sat Aug-06-11 11:32 PM by Adenoid_Hynkel
She was a liberal in the '90s, attended Bush fundraisers in the early 2000s, then backed Hillary in 2008. Now she's with the Greens?
She's all over the map and her politics as as erratic as her career choices since her sitcom ended.
She jumped the shark around the final season of her show and has just been downright weird ever since.

Still, she's more credible than Trump, who we should never forget led the GOP pack at one point.
That's the difference in liberals and conservatives. They embrace their nutcases, where we keep ours on the fringe.

150. Great link!
I defy anyone to watch this and tell me again how unqualified she is. Articulate, thoughtful, insightful . . . The clip reminds us that her show was the first one featuring a homosexual kiss (she threatened to walk when the network said they would refuse to air it), the first show about a working class family, they tackled feminism, spousal abuse, abortion and that was in the 1980's and 90's. This is truly a good series of clips. I urge anyone who hasn't to go to the link and watch her.

151. I've seen a little bit of her TV show and don't know too much about it
but I'd prefer HER for sure over (coughhcough) Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann. This probably is less serious than Arnold Schwarzenegger announcing his candidacy on Leno's show and winning a recall election whose candidates included porn actor Mary Carey and Diff'rent Strokes actor Gary Coleman. Wonder how many people will write in Roseanne if that's possible?
