FBI widens News Corp inquiry after alleged computer hacking by subsidiary
Source: The Guardian

The FBI is widening its investigation of News Corporation's activities within the US to look at whether alleged computer hacking by one of its subsidiaries was an isolated case or part of a "larger pattern of behaviour", Time magazine is reporting.

Time suggests that the FBI inquiry has been extended from a relatively narrow look at alleged malpractices by News Corp in America into a more general investigation of whether the company used possibly illegal strong-arm tactics to browbeat rival firms.

The allegation of computer hacking was made by the retail advertising company Floorgraphics against the advertising branch of News Corp, News America. In a civil lawsuit against News Corp in 2004, Floorgraphics told a court that its website, protected by password security, had been breached 11 times over four months without authorisation.

The source of the alleged hacking was traced back to an IP address registered to News America in Connecticut.

1. Gee--I guess I'll tune in to Fox News to get the details on this story.
I mea, they're so close to it and all, so I'm sure they'll have the best coverage.

2. What is this? An investigation?
Why is the FBI so preoccupied with lookin' backwards to the past, instead of lookin' forwards to the future? You don't see the FBI investigating all those dead-and-gone allegations of torture and stuff, do you? Of course not! Because uncovering crimes against humanity might be construed as being a political witch hunt, politicizing garden-variety political disagreements. So why are they poking around in a civil suit over stuff that may or may not have happened seven years ago?

7. Maybe we'll peel back so many layers that
they will have to find the kernel of the plot to ruin our world. Don't forget that Rummy can now be sued. Rupert is getting close to being exposed. The wheels of karma grind slowly, but finely.

4. thanks for the background links/stories - just feeling hopeful
that it appears that the FBI is aware of at least one of the many tendrils of this story and perhaps will actually begin something that becomes more than a quick look and clear inquiry.

5. For the time being
The Guardian appears to be the only one of our newspapers here in the UK which hasn't been at fault in connection with any of the alleged claims. They do however tend to move things about inside their Media as opposed to News section presumably to sustain interest.

6. I have found a routine in the past month for looking for the latest
as I rise a bit later (being in the States). Start with the link to the news blog (get a feel for what is unfolding on various fronts). No blog that day (or at least that time of day) - then to the news front page, if nothing there then to the media. Check when I get up in the am, and again when I get home from work.

Always appreciate your posts - esp when you highlight what things mean per your systems (police, who has what authority, etc.) and perspectives. Here is my chance to thank you and hope tell you that you are appreciated. :hi:
