US Rep Rivera, exile groups protest Milanes show

MIAMI -- A coalition of small exile groups and U.S. Rep. David Rivera are asking local authorities to cancel the first Miami concert of famed Cuban artist Pablo Milanes.

Tuesday's demand comes days after a Cuban appellate court upheld the 15-year prison sentence of a U.S. government sub-contractor for bringing satellite and other communication equipment into the country illegally.

In response, hardline groups have stepped up efforts to get President Barack Obama to halt cultural exchanges with the island, including events such as Milanes' concert. Milanes is one of Cuba's most famous musicians, one of the founders of the folk music known as Nueva Trova.

The U.S. could deny his visa but has given no indication it will.

Florida Cuban "exiles" have a long ugly tradition of attacking veunues in Florida where Cuban artists have been scheduled to appear, or art galleries where their art is shown, etc.

Prior to a concert by Cuba's group Los Van Van, they crowded outside the theater, threw D cell batteries, frozen Cokes, baggies filled with excrement at concert goers, and anyone attempting to get into the auditorium, as well as spitting on them, and shrieking filthy insults. One of the people attacked was injured, and taken to the hospital.

Sad.

3. right wing Cuban-Americans are not particularly welcome on the island
although their legal presence is usually tolerated by Cuba and you certainly won't ever see the disgusting and uncivilized animosity over there, compared to that which is commonly displayed by the exiles in S. Florida.

This is not to say that Cuba will allow blatantly anti-socialist propaganda and secret operations against their society to go on without some action to suppress it. Cuba is an open society and permits civil discourse within its existing socialist structure.

The Cuban exiles will never get their island back to the way it was. They can't understand this much, because they are severely lacking in basic intelligence and common sense. State-monopoly capitalism just won't work in Cuba.

6. Cuba is an open society
far more open than the US by comparison.

The last time I visited a few years ago, I never had any problems, and fortunately I did not see any terrorist attacks coming from the US. Although it does happen and it has frequently happened in the past, it has not forced the Cubans to be paranoid of Americans who visit.

Imagine what America would be like if it was subjected to a half-century of non-stop terrorist attacks by the Taliban and Al Qaida.

Exile groups oppose Cuban musician Pablo Milanés’ Aug. 27 concert in Miami

The performance will go ahead, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez said Tuesday, because he has no legal authority to stop it.

About 20 groups of Cuban exiles and former political prisoners who oppose the upcoming Miami performance of Cuban singer Pablo Milanés asked Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez and county commissioners Tuesday to cancel the show.

Milanés is scheduled to sing for the first time in South Florida on Aug. 27 at the AmericanAirlines Arena downtown.

Emilio Izquierdo, general coordinator of the group Cuban American Patriots and Friends, one of those making the demands, said Tuesday that the arena “belongs to taxpayers.” He said that, for that reason, it cannot be used by those who oppose democratic interests and principles.

“The concert is an affront,” Izquierdo told El Nuevo Herald. “Milanés is an ideological agent of a enemy government that promotes terrorism. We don’t want him in the capital and heart of (Cuban exiles).”
