Gaddafi says will stay in Tripoli "until the end"
Source: Reuters

TUNIS (Reuters) - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said Sunday he will stay in Tripoli "until the end" and called on his supporters around the country to help liberate the capital from a rebel offensive.

He said in an audio message played over state television he was "afraid that Tripoli will burn" and he said he would provide weapons to supporters to fight off the rebels.

1. (Tin foil hat moment) It's Gaddafi who might well burn Tripoli. Though, I think this is just bluster
He's known for that. I suspect there's an element of "take the money and run" somewhere in all of this.

2. This from Al Jazeera's transcript of the speech
"Those of you without a weapon should come and receive a weapon. All the weapons depots must open and the masses must be armed. Thousands must receive weapons now. Open the depots. I give the order to open the depots to arm the masses."

His intention is the people will fight to defend him, not turn the weapons on him and his forces. Somehow, I don't think that order is being followed by the military.

5. He should have negotiated his retirement when he had the chance
Pre-Arab spring, he could have negotiated his step down, elections, and sacked the treasury like a dictator is supposed to do

Instead, he gave into pride, the kryptonite, or rather cotton candy heroin for dictators...
