Sixteen months after the Smolensk tragedy, military prosecutors investigating the April 2010 crash have said they would charge two individuals for failing to adequately prepare the flight of the Tupolev Tu-154 that was carrying President Lech Kaczyński, his wife and 94 others to Smolensk, Russia.
The two servicemen occupied a leadership position in the now-disbanded 36th regiment, the military squadron responsible for the technical preparations for the flight and for the training of the pilots. They face up to three years in prison. Their names and ranks have not been disclosed.
Further charges may be brought, TVN24 reported.
The accusations disclosed on Monday relate specifically to the military, and Chief Military Prosecutor General Krzysztof Parulski stressed that it was impossible to say yet when the investigation might be completed.
Following the Polish government's final report on the April 10, 2010 plane crash, published in July this year, 13 army officers were dismissed, including three generals. Bogdan Klich, the former defense minister, also resigned.
