S.C. Sen. Graham: U.S. Should Spend More On Foreign Aid (“Egypt is the prize to be won”)
Source: The State

COLUMBIA, S.C. — U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham on Monday called on the U.S. government to send more money to Middle East countries in turmoil to push them toward democracy.

Speaking to the Columbia Rotary Club, Graham — the ranking Republican on a Senate foreign policy subcommittee — said he is working on a $1 billion package of aid for Egypt before that country’s November elections.

“Egypt is the prize to be won,” said Graham, R-Seneca. “Foreign aid is a very complicated, controversial topic, particularly when you’re broke. But ... it is good for the American people and the American government to reach out and help those who live in peace with us.

“Find me an example where two democracies went to war,” he added. “Democracies have a way, through the rule of law, of working out their problems.”

2. Spending money he doesn't have
Didn't he get the (Repub) memo? We're broke. Pockets turned out, nothing but lint. Nada, zip, zilch.

Or does he mean we need to raise the debt ceiling to do it?

4. Before the aid
is passed out, I hope the recipients read "The Shock Doctrine". The U.S. doesn't distribute $$ without a whole lot of strings attached, imo.

7. While I agree with his last statements, I think he needs to find a source of funds.
Either increase taxes to pay for it or cut $1 billion from something else.

9. 'from something else'
You have to watch those words otherwise they will take it from the bottom

He talks about democracies not fighting each other so it should be easy to take it from the war department

13. "Egypt the prize"
Now where have I heard that before?

Oh, right, in an obscure presentation to the Defense Policy Board by an ex-LaRouchie named Laurent Murawiec.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/41385785/Does_Anyone_Remember_Egypt_The_Prize

But a lot of people also noticed the weird end of the presentation. The very last slide declared the “Grand strategy for the Middle East” in three bullet points.

* Iraq is the tactical pivot

* Saudi Arabia the strategic pivot

* Egypt the prize

What was so striking about this is that no one knew what the hell it meant. Sure we were angling for war with Iraq. And a lot of neocon types seemed to have it out for the Saudis. But what was Egypt doing on the list, and why would it be the prize. Here’s how Jack Shafer put it:

:wtf: Does Graham have some sort of tie to the mysterious Murawiec? (Or, rather, did he; Murawiec died in 2009 at age 58. :tinfoilhat: )

16. Next time a bridge collapses
here in the US, I hope someone does an estimate of how much it would have taken to repair it, and compare it to the amount of foreign aid that we give out.

Plus the fact that the people we give aid to do not like us at all, and will never like us no matter how much we give them.
