For Romney, Social Issues Pose New Test
Source: NY Times

After years of trying to tamp down concerns about his stance on social issues and his Mormon faith, Mitt Romney is now being forced to fend off revived questions from rivals and evangelical leaders about the consistency and depth of his conservatism.

Mr. Romney has tried at every stage of the race for the Republican presidential nomination to focus on the economy, and he did so again on Saturday, when he appeared here at the Values Voter Summit, a gathering of social conservative activists.

But he also felt compelled to reiterate that he was in sync with social conservatives as he ran through his positions on abortion, marriage, judicial appointments and religious values. And as other speakers condemned homosexuality and raised questions about whether a Mormon is a true Christian, Mr. Romney emphasized that tolerance and civility were conservative values.

“The task before us is to focus on the conservative beliefs and the values that unite us,” he said. “Let no agenda narrow our vision or drive us apart.”

2. He'll say and do whatever it takes. There's no there there.
The GOP field is in disarray. I think Mittens will get the nod, but who knows?

The Palin cult is still at it. They won't give up.

3. The Religious Right
The Religious Right won't be satisfied with any repig candidate unless he/she is willing to pledge nuclear mega-death to anybody (millions and/or billions of people) that they hate.

All in the name of JAYZUZ!

5. Tolerance and civility are conservative values?
Tolerance has never been a conservative value. That's a libertarian stance. Conservatives only tolerate people who conform to whatever social norms are current among conservatives.

Civility went out when the conservative movement was taken over by the extreme right wing Christians.

Edited on Sat Oct-08-11 07:02 PM by Hawaii Hiker
it will ALWAYS be easy to vote Democrat because i absolutely HATE social conservatives....I hate those people so much i need a Tylenol for the head-aches those people give me....And make no mistake, REGARDLESS of whomever the GOP nominee is, he or she will always appoint far right judges on the courts if they were elected, to help advance their 7th. century social agenda....Democrats who are thinking of staying home in 2012 because they're pissed off, should remember that a preisdent not only appoints SCOTUS justices, but many judges to Court of Appeals and District Courts during an administration....

8. Ditto, ditto, ditto...
PLEASE, keep posting this AND reminding those weirdo "Dems/Indies" here, that claim
that they are so dissatisfied with PBO, that they will not vote next go around.

NO ONE could be that stupid, unless they are simply DINO or a paid troll.

7. Would also think that the 99% should be having an effect on these debates?
