Gunmen attack mosque in Tripoli
Source: AFP

Tripoli - A group of more than 200 heavily armed gunmen attacked a mosque in the Libyan capital and ransacked the tombs of two imams, witnesses said on Monday.

"They arrived shortly after 22:00 , between 200 and 300 of them, in pickups fitted with heavy machineguns. They took off at about 1:00 am," said Mahmud Rahman, a resident of Tripoli's northeastern Al-Masri district.

"They forced open the mosque's door and then started to dig up the tombs of imams Abdel Rahman el-Masri and Salem Abu Seif, and made off with their relics," said Rahman.

An AFP journalist, visiting the mosque and its adjoining Koranic school, said Muslim holy books had been burnt.

...in order to steal some old bones.

People do some really stupid things over religious differences.

7. Well...
For one thing, the commentators on that story are automatically blaming NATO and the NTC for the lapse in security (or the vandalism itself). Even though it may be Qaddafi-allied chaos-spreaders, sociopath treasure hunters who are followers of a different imanic school... but what it the motive here? And is this story being reported from anywhere else?

2. I bet you
Libya would have still been enjoying the higghest standard of living in African and pretty much living in a safe country if the west had just minded their own business.

5. then why was Obama shaking his hand just a few yrs ago?
McCain, Graham and Susan Collins were also in Tripoli lobbying for a stronger military assistance to Libya. Btw I will never justify the killing of 100s of thousands of human beings because another group of people killed 200 or so Americans
