RPT-UPDATE 3-Gaddafi's death - who pulled the trigger?
Source: Reuters

The exact circumstances of his demise are still unclear with conflicting accounts of his death. But the footage of the last chaotic moments of Gaddafi's life offered some clues into what happened.

Gaddafi was still alive when he was captured near Sirte. In the video, filmed by a bystander in the crowd and later aired on television, Gaddafi is shown dazed and wounded being dragged off a vehicle's bonnet and pulled to the ground by his hair.

"Keep him alive, keep him alive!" someone shouts. Gaddafi then goes out of view and gunshots ring out.

"They captured him alive and while he was being taken away, they beat him and then they killed him," one senior source in the NTC told Reuters. "He might have been resisting."

30. He does appear to have a bit of a fan club going on here.
Just like Chavez, they are mourning for their "friend" Muammar.

6. My guess is that is waht happened.
His captors, being more of a militia then trained professionals, got carried away, beat the hell out of him and then one shot Gaddafi in the head.

8. I imagine there are a few dozen criminal warlords/mass killers around the world
who are sleeping with 1 eye opened these days. Making a reputation as the next Idi Amin might fast track you in getting your ticket punched.

With a few exceptions, like NK and maybe Syria, state-level tyrants and evildoers are not as prevalent as they once were...but there are plenty of minor leaguers looking to make it into the bigs. I suspect that there will be more of these operations, hopefully coordinated by the UN, to identify and quickly deal with these killers before they can apply their skills on a national stage. Treat them as the criminals they are and use the tools we have to remove them with surgical precision. Deal with them as a micro-problem now and avoid the macro-problem later.

14. While I am not one to celebrate the death of anyone,
no matter how despicable, the circumstances of this death likely happened just as some here have theorized. After being victimized by him for so long and having fought so hard for these past several months, it is understandable if regrettable that some would be so overtaken by seeing him in the flesh that they would lose control.

He had an overwhelming belief in his own invincibility and power, but if he were to lose the battle (which he never believed he would because his grip on reality in the past 20 years has been tenuous at best), he wanted to die as a martyr.

It looks as though that wish was granted.

23. Good point
i will never understand the assholes who say "conspiracy" - like it never happens. more than 1 person working to achieve a common goal IS a conspiracy! and it happens all the time. we have a long way to go to un-brainwash The American People. i would have like to have heard from him - at his trial - the extent of US and UK involvement in Libya over the years. Now we'll never know. Like Oswald - he never lived to tell his tale.

29. So everything is a conspiracy, then.
I would take issue with your definition. Maybe you have the number of people correct but I would say a conspiracy, by definition, is designed to achieve something without telling the truth to everyone who is NOT part of the conspiracy.

Who cares about the extent of our involvement in Libya. The plain truth of the matter is the Libyan people wanted his ass gone and he stayed to prolong an unnecessary civil war. Ego was at the root of the uprising, not a conspiracy.

19. It's not okay, let alone a victory, if anyone sinks to the level of a Gaddafy.
Edited on Fri Oct-21-11 04:06 AM by No Elephants
If he was trying to escape or attacking his captors, though, the shooting may have been necessary.

And only if it was necessary can civilized people condone it--condone, not cheer. The latter is barbaric.

We should be beyond bread and circus by now.

In any event, we're not getting any bread--we're only giving it.

22. I agree - and find it sad to see so many good DU'ers cheering A Murder
no matter who the victim is - in this case Gaddafi - regardless we should never sink to their level. i didn't believe in capital punishment before this, and i don't now either - nor do i think do many of those cheering - if they would step away from their emotions for a minute and think about it. sigh.

25. My reponses are a reaction to leftists calling Gaddafi a hero and a martyr
when he was a ruthless murderer. He was murdered for that reason.
