BEIJING (AFP) - A Tibetan Buddhist monk set himself on fire Tuesday in protest at China's rule of the Himalayan region, rights groups said, the tenth similar incident to occur in the nation's southwest this year.

The monk, identified as Dawa Tsering, poured petrol on his body and set himself on fire Tuesday morning in Sichuan province's Kandze county, the India-based Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said on its website.

"While on fire, monk Dawa Tsering raised slogans demanding the return of H.H (his holiness) the Dalai Lama, equality, and freedom in Tibet," the statement said.

------

Eight Tibetan Buddhist monks and one nun have set themselves alight in Tibetan-inhabited regions of Sichuan province since the self-immolation of a young monk at the Kirti monastery in Aba county in March sparked major protests that led to a government clampdown.

The world must shame China for denying the Tibetans to practice their religion as they please.

Petition:

Ten young Tibetans have set fire to themselves in eastern Tibet since March 2011; eight since 26 September. At least five have died including a nun. These unprecedented and truly desperate acts are a cry to the outside world for help.

------

This growing tragedy, if left unchecked, could spiral even further into a nation-wide crisis, unless the world acts now.

The international community, both citizens and governments, must Stand Up for Tibet. Global diplomatic intervention now will save Tibetan lives.

4. Of course not...
It's very difficult for journalists or diplomats to even get into Tibet.

Allow journalists, diplomats in Tibet, China told

28 September 2011
Press Trust of India

WASHINGTON, 28 SEPT: The USA has appealed to China to allow access to journalists and diplomats in Tibetan areas as it expressed serious concern over recent reports of self-immolation of two monks there.

“We are seriously concerned by reports of two recent self-immolations of monks from the Ngaba Kirti monastery in China's Sichuan province,” the State Department said in a statement.

In light of the continuing underlying grievances of China's Tibetan population, “We again urge Chinese leaders to respect the rights of Tibetans, to address policies in Tibetan areas that have created tension, and to protect Tibetans' unique religious, cultural and linguistic identity,” it said.

The statement also said: “We continue to urge the Chinese government to allow access to Tibetan areas of China for both journalists and diplomats.”
After the self-immolations in protest, authorities have reportedly banned public gatherings and text messages through mobile phones.

There was major unrest in Tibet in 2008: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Tibetan_unrest and in 2009 among the Uighers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_2009_%C3%9Cr%C3%BCmqi_riots

They are afraid of something like the Arab Spring taking place in China i.e. a repeat of Tiananmen. There is major disappointment in Han China over corruption, environmental degradation, and brutal treatment of commoners.

'Occupy' Blocked In China, Joins Banned Search Terms On Microblog

China is watching developments carefully and doesn't want the movement to spread to its nation. An Occupy China Facebook page has already sprung up, along with other chatter on the topic.

The latest development: Chinese authorities have blocked phrases with the word 'Occupy' on the popular Chinese microblog Sina Weibo, China Digital Times reports.

9. Tunisia
2010

A new wave of self-immolation protests is currently ongoing in the Middle East and North Africa, with at least 14 recorded incidents. These actions have helped inspire the 2010–2011 Arab world protests, including the Tunisian uprising, the 2011 Algerian protests (including many self-immolations in Algeria), and the 2011 Egyptian protests and there have also been self-immolation protests in Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, and Syria.<10><11>

10. Yea. When people afraid
of death tangle with people who aren't, it's game over for fear. It's just a matter of time.

Rulers: Ch. 17 - Dao De Jing - Laozi

The best rulers are scarcely known by their subjects;
The next best are loved and praised;
The next are feared;
The next despised:
They have no faith in their subjects,
So their subjects become unfaithful to them.
When the best rulers acheive their purpose
Their subjects claim the acheivement as their own.

12. Unfortunately, I doubt that China wil even bat an eye. They will burn 1000 monks for the natural
resources of Tibet. They will never, ever leave Tibet---and they will continue their cultural genocide in that country. All because of their greed. Just like a whole bunch of European countries.
