Omaha World HeraldLINCOLN — A trio of environmental groups has expanded a lawsuit to stop the Keystone XL oil pipeline over concerns that spills could harm whooping cranes and other endangered species in Nebraska.
Since the proposed pipeline would cross the Missouri, Niobrara and Platte Rivers in Nebraska, any spills of crude oil could hurt the fish and wildlife that rely on the waterways.
The lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State Department challenges statements by TransCanada Inc., the project builder, that the pipeline is not likely to affect whooping cranes and other species.
The Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Earth and Western Nebraska Resources Council brought the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Omaha.
