SAN ONOFRE (CBS) — An emergency has been declared at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Diego County.

Orange County Sheriff’s officials say that there was an incident at the plant at approximately 3:10 p.m. Tuesday. The plant and its employees are under a Level 3 Alert, which means there is a serious incident according to the International Nuclear Events Scale.

The classification could me anything from a near accident to a lost radioactive device. There is also a very low probability of public exposure.

No radiation is currently escaping from the power plant, Lt. Roland Chacon said. The Orange County Emergency Operations Center has been activated.

update:

Southern California Edison tells CBS 2 that the incident is “an ammonia leak that is being contained.” SoCal Edison added that the leak is not nuclear.

Just give me the restless power of the wind
Give me the comforting glow of a wood fire
Give me the Spirit of living things
But please take all of your atomic poison power away.

6. On a global basis, isn't the level of the seas supposed to be rising?
If that is true (and I believe it is), and if your photograph is accurate, then it's only a matter of time before that nuclear puppy is going to be submerged, anyway. I mean, I have read scientific data that says a 100 ft. rise of the level of the sea on the west coast of the USA is a conservative (I know, bad word choice) estimate. I wonder if those nipples will float? The "protective" sea wall pictured in the accompanying photo is an insult to the awesome power of the Pacific Ocean. And I believe it is the same situation farther up the coast at the Diablo Canyon nuclear facility above San Luis Obispo. Of course the Diablo Canyon facility is considered to be an even greater danger, because they had the brains to build that puppy almost right on top of the feared (at least by some) san andreas fault line (way to go guys). "It's not our fault, blame San Andreas." was the guiding logic of the day behind that one. I hope my even greater concern herein for the public's safety is not considered to be off topic of this latest thread.

8. David Geffen probably has a sturdier sea wall at his Malibu beach pad.
It is a ridiculously unsafe looking set up for sure.

5. Global Warming/glacier melting is causing increasing numbers of earthquakes ....
of increasing intensity --

We should all be discussing shutting down the 103/106 nuclear reactrors -- which are

simply "boiling water to create steam" -- which could prevent "a whimper or a bang" -- !!!

It takes approximately 6 months to properly shut down one of these reactors -- and I don't

know if that includes the WASTE!!

7. It's funny how everything is perfectly OK in nuclear plant emergencies isn't it?
That is until they can no longer hide the truth and everything suddenly isn't OK after all.
