Occupy Detroit march draws hundreds of supporters
Christine Ferretti/ The Detroit News

Detroit— A coalition of more than 400 union members, community organizations, students, seniors and jobless workers gathered Sunday in Hart Plaza to march in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

The group assembled Sunday afternoon at the Labor Legacy Monument to pass through Detroit's financial district, calling for Wall Street and big banks to be held accountable for their role in the ongoing jobs crisis. The group joins the growing movement in Detroit, one of encampments in cities nationwide in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

Sunday's march, they say, urges elected officials in Lansing and in Washington, D.C., to work for the 99 percent that have been left behind in the devastating economy, not just the top one percent.

"Occupy Detroit is a part of this now international movement. We're finally coming together as the people who've been casualties of decisions that have been made by the top one percent," said Nina Chacker, 24, of Detroit, who participated in the march and is a member of the Detroit Federation of Teachers. "People are frustrated and tired of being pushed around. This is the first time we've really come together like this to stand up for ourselves and to have a collective voice against it."
