Rice containing radioactive caesium found in Japan
Source: BBC

By Roland Buerk

Radioactive caesium has been detected above the safety level in rice for the first time in Japan since the nuclear crisis began at the Fukushima plant.

The sample came from a Fukushima city farm about 60km from the plant.

The government is considering banning shipments from the area it was found.

There have been a series of scares over radiation in food in Japan in recent months - in beef, mushrooms and green tea among other products - but never before in the country's staple, rice.

1. My heart breaks for that country and its people.
I've heard people use the term "Biblical proportions" when it doesn't apply.

It is apropos here, though.

2. The government can try, but the rice will make it onto international markets,
country of origin obscured.

8. The market for Japanese-style rice is rather limited
Edited on Fri Nov-18-11 12:26 AM by Art_from_Ark
The short-grain type that is predominant in Japan, japonica, is only preferred in Japan, and parts of Korea and China, so there isn't much of an international market for it. Furthermore, the variety that is favored in Fukushima, Koshihikari, is only grown in one other place in the world besides Japan-- and that is Arkansas. So it would be pretty difficult to hide the country of origin.

13. Nuclear power is the dirtiest, most dangerous, and most expensive way
to boil water ever invented.

Anyone building a plant from this day forward is guilty of genocide.

7. UPDATE: Japan bans Fukushima rice shipment due to contamination
Japan has banned shipments of rice from an area near the nuclear power station at Fukushima after high levels of radioactive caesium were detected.

The sample came from a Fukushima city farm about 60km from the plant.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in March, resulting in radiation leaks.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said the material was detected during pre-shipment tests and the contaminated rice had not been sold to consumers.

9. I'm sure the FDA would make similar assurances on behalf of U.S. growers.
No matter what the reality was.

11. After three reactor melt-downs (or rather, three melt-throughs)....
...it would be easier to say what doesn't have radioactive cesium in it.
