Gingrich: Laws preventing child labor are 'truly stupid'
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 02:10 AM by Adenoid_Hynkel
Source: CNN

(CNN) - Newt Gingrich proposed a plan Friday that would allow poor children to clean their schools for money, saying such a setup would both allow students to earn income and endow them with a strong work ethic.

Speaking at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, the former House Speaker said his system would be an improvement on current child labor laws, which he called "truly stupid."

"It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in child laws which are truly stupid," Gingrich said. "Saying to people you shouldn't go to work before you're 14, 16. You're totally poor, you're in a school that's failing with a teacher that's failing."

<...>

"I tried for years to have a very simple model. These schools should get rid of unionized janitors, have one master janitor, pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work; they'd have cash; they'd have pride in the schools. They'd begin the process of rising."

Leave it to Newt to use one speech to both propose a throwback to the workhouses of Dickensian England and attack school janitors as some kind of cushy elite.

"No second helping of porridge for you, Oliver Twist! Now go scrub the toilets in the boys room!"

1. I can tell it did him a lot of good.......NOT.
Kids are in school to LEARN. Period. OK, some social skills and like that, but working at keeping the school clean is not the point.

My. God.

And how many poor students does the Newt think are in each of the schools? Does this new plan apply to all schools since there should not be any limit to child employment?

happen. Those damned greedy Union janitors should be fired. Everyone knows how overpaid they are. I bet they make $10 an hour. Who cares? Then the private schools can "hire" the students for $3 an hour and they can support their lazy assed ex-janitor parent and the rest of their no good family.
:sarcasm:

If ever there was a bastard that deserved to have his million$ seized and distributed to the needy it is him. That disgusting POS has no idea of what work is. Where does he "work," the heritage foundation? The place where idiots like him are paid million$ to espouse hate and poverty? Where being a sociopath is the only requirement.

When people like Jonathon Swift made statements like this, at least everyone knew he was a satirist. When Grinch makes a "Modest Proposal" he is serious and believes his own insanity. My God, how can any media or anyone not see that this is a seriously deranged, dangerous person? He really deserves to be given to the poor people of this country. He makes Jack-the-ripper look like a saint.

For pure dickery and douchebaggery, Gingrich's is rivaled only by Cheney, Abramoff or Wolfowitz, and perhaps by John Edwards.

But, so what? He's only saying the most extreme things now to keep his name in the papers. Like all his opponents except Romney, his campaign isn't going anywhere.

40. oh, yes, he cheated on his wife who had cancer
I just dont count cheating on ones spouse as bad as advocating that kids work. on a moral level cheating is horrible, i have never done it and had it done to me a few times. i just have a disconnect between sex life and politics.

on a personal level i agree that edwards is not the kind of person i would be (people do cheat, when my male or female friends begin to tell me about cheating i cut it off quick and say dont tell me what you wouldnt tell your spouse because i dont want to know and keep a secret from them, it will cause me stress)

on a political level he is no where near as bad as the others you listed, i just thought i missed something politally horrible he had done.

i think we can agree that cheaters are not nice people (unless it is an "open marriage" of course and the other spouse expects such behavior)

Publicly advocating policies that enslave and degrade and entire generation is a level of evil only a prominent public politician can achieve.

Edward's lack of personal ethics harmed his family (and his own career) severely

Newt's will cripple an entire nation

105. You look at the deception he was doing after cheating and conceiving a kid

That he lined up a friend to lie for him and say that it was his child, and that he hired his mistress on the campaign. I don't look at the cheating at all. I look at the other things he did, and things that came out after his career collapsed, none of which have been good. Though I would be surprised if Edwards made a comeback. I wouldn't put it beyond him, though.

I hope you noticed I didn't include Anthony Weiner. It's still an injustice that he had to resign.

housekeeping jobs were the pretty much the only on-campus jobs that weren't work study (parents refused to complete financial disclosure forms required for any aid - another issue)

Ended up in charge of an all-guys dorm noted for parties and general rowdiness.

Nothing like cleaning up other people's shit for a living. Especially when the other people have affluent parents paying their full bill (hence the time to party)

And no I'm not bragging about my sacrifice - it was truly miserable

17. I DID work on the janitorial crew for our school when I was 15, back in 1995
I have no idea what he's talking about with regard to laws preventing children from working. In fact, I was employed through either a state or federal program (I forget which) that provided tax-free summer employment to children of low-income families. I was paid minimum wage and worked 40 hr a week during summer break, along with 4 other students and the two full-time janitors. I showed up at the school at 7am, painted, buffed floors, carried school supplies, mowed grass, did minor repairs, etc, took a 30-min lunch break, and went home at 3:30pm. THEN I had chores to do around the farm.

Have the laws been changed since then to prevent such work? I truly enjoyed that job; it wasn't back-breaking labor like baling hay, paid better than what my parents gave me, allowed me to bank over $1000 that summer alone, gave me something to put down on future job applications, and was actually fun working with classmates.

Must earn your keep you know? God forbid that adults do the jobs that preteens can do.

For the record, I had my first paying job at 14. Worked construction all summer between 8th and 9th grade. I did it because I wanted to, not because it was the only way I could afford to pay for my crappy school lunches. Because you know that's where Gingrich and his ilk are headed.

180. And I doubt he intends it to be 'voluntary'. And what of students who are having trouble learning?
What will a work day do to them?

Oh, well, maybe they can flunk out and end up as Boehner said 'You were born to be a ditch digger because your parents didn't work hard enough to pay your college tuition, so just get on with it.'

Still, I'm glad you had a good experience with it. There was something similar at my high school, which also taught vocational skills for those not planning to go to college. They had a beauty school to teach that profession, automotive and wood shop, also ROTC for those who wanted to go that route.

I'm sure Newt's solution is to privatize or charter school after shutting the public, take all comers, schools down. We have too many people looking for work and TPTB don't care about educating them to get better lives, they just want them to die out of sight.

24. Gingirch is talking about them working at much younger ages, and during school
He's complaining that children under 14 can't do work like being a janitor, and claims that successful people all started work between 9 and 14. And he wants to fire adult janitors, who do the work all through the year, and replace them with the poor children. So they'd be doing this work during the school year, clearing up after their richer classmates, and no doubt getting very tired with their schoolwork suffering. But it would suit him to have poor children visibly serving the richer ones.

Such a program would only "allow" the poor students to be school janitors? Apparently, it's no longer enough that poor students endure the shame and humiliation of hand-me-down clothes and lunch program vouchers; now they should have to clean up the school for everyone else?

109. Life in the Coal Mine...
Work in the coal breakers is exceedingly hard and dangerous. Crouched over the chutes, the boys sit hour after hour, picking out the pieces of slate and other refuse from the coal as it rushes past to the washers. From the cramped position they have to assume, most of them become more or less deformed and bent-backed like old men. When a boy has been working for some time and begins to get round-shouldered, his fellows say that “He’s got his boy to carry round wherever he goes.”

The coal is hard, and accidents to the hands, such as cut, broken, or crushed fingers, are common among the boys. Sometimes there is a worse accident: a terrified shriek is heard, and a boy is mangled and torn in the machinery, or disappears in the chute to be picked out later smothered and dead. Clouds of dust fill the breakers and are inhaled by the boys, laying the foundations for asthma and miners' consumption.

I once stood in a breaker for half an hour and tried to do the work a twelve-year-old boy was doing day after day, for ten hours at a stretch, for sixty cents a day. The gloom of the breaker appalled me. Outside the sun shone brightly, the air was pellucid , and the birds sang in chorus with the trees and the rivers. Within the breaker there was blackness, clouds of deadly dust enfolded everything, the harsh, grinding roar of the machinery and the ceaseless rushing of coal through the chutes filled the ears. I tried to pick out the pieces of slate from the hurrying stream of coal, often missing them; my hands were bruised and cut in a few minutes; I was covered from head to foot with coal dust, and for many hours afterwards I was expectorating some of the small particles of anthracite I had swallowed.

I could not do that work and live, but there were boys of ten and twelve years of age doing it for fifty and sixty cents a day. Some of them had never been inside of a school; few of them could read a child’s primer. True, some of them attended the night schools, but after working ten hours in the breaker the educational results from attending school were practically nil. “We goes fer a good time, an‘ we keeps de guys wot’s dere hoppin’ all de time,” said little Owen Jones, whose work I had been trying to do. . . .

Step 1. Change Child Labor Laws to allow children as young as 5 years old to work.
Step 2. Require any student receiving free or reduced price lunches to work to reimburse the state for their "free ride"

But Newt, I've been hearing recently from your sociopathic, grifter base that capitalism, essentially, rendered child labor unnecessary because of the productivity advances brought about by the economic system. Yet, you posit this - I guess - as a serious idea.

So, is the system as productive as advertised or are you just a nihilistic, con-man asshole?

I often wonder if they're capable of critical thinking at all, or if their overwhelming zeal to please those in authority is the only stimulus that keeps electrical impulses firing through their minuscule brains.

53. careful
To assume that he is just stupid you need to be ignorant of the fact that he has a PhD in modern European history from Tulane.

He was a science teacher, a history teacher, and a geography teacher.

His dissertation was on "Belgian Education Policy in the Congo." Tulane doesn't give those papers out like Chiclets. I know that he has discussed childhood education with really smart people for months on end. Those discussions would surely have included the real science (which we knew even in 1971 when he studied) that childhood education truly breaks the poverty cycle and that childhood work programs do not. Science is cool like that.

He isn't just stupid. He's cruel. His arguments are not good faith arguments. He isn't trying to solve the problems, because he knows the actual science connected to the cure but refuses to advocate for it.

97. You mean the Belgian education policy in the Congo where they
held the wives and children of miners in gulags and chopped off their limbs to "encourage" the miners to be more productive?

I learned about that as a freshman econ major at Texas A&M in the early 70s.

It was thought to be cruel, even by economists.

Newt is damaged. The Unabomber was an academic as well. Too many different sorts of intelligences abound to make any real statement about that, but we can certainly point out sociopathic behaviors, as has been done on this thread and many others previously.

The interview with his hideous parents years ago on television should put to rest any wondering about where he got the damage, but he's too fucked to fix now.

Wishing him an early and earned dirt nap from clogged arteries, exploded system, or other infarction, I'll close my feelings about him.

And yes, certainly, anyone who is willing to work can change themselves, but lazy fuckers who think they're already superior won't do that - hence, Newt.

Footnote to King Leopold and his Congo enterprise: he desperately needed money for gifts so that a 19 year old girl he was pursuing would have sex with him. She got a palace in the middle of a lake and more than a billion dollars worth of gifts in today's values - but it's unknown if she ever did consent.

Delightful, these Western morals, are they not?

61. You can do all those things now
The child labor laws only limit the amount of time a child under 16 can work during the day and week, some jobs are not allowed at all because they are too hazardous or unhealthy for children. The laws also maintain a minimum wage, as well as making sure the child is willingly working.

So knowing all this, what do you think Newt wants?

98. I teach in a large high school of more than 3500 enrollment. You think
some kids are ridiculed now?

Can't wait to see the "classy" kids pour out their drink on the floor, and say, "Hey, janitor-boy? Clean that UP before you get fired!"

High school is not cruel enough already for those without proper clothes, the neat accessories, a phone of latest design, clear complexion, expensive haircut?

In addition, 85% of the students here qualify for free or reduced lunch, and there are 4 janitors to clean five buildings scattered across 6 city blocks. 3 of those janitors don't deserve to keep their jobs to support their families in this lousy economy?

Paper routes and mowing lawns have a couple of things in common - they can be begun or quit at leisure, and neither is performed in the company and service of other kids.

One last thought - which will have priority - mopping somebody's puke right now or going to science lab?

203. I dunno. What is wrong with a 9-year-old using hazardous chemicals....
To clean toilets, instead of doing school work--i.e., no labor laws means he can work instead of going to school--and doing it for a pittance that won't buy him much, instead of the money going to a unionized adult janitor who not only can better handle such hazardous chemicals, but use the fair wage the union got him to feed his family?

Please don't compare apples and oranges here. Newt isn't suggesting that kids start lemonade stands on the weekend or that teens to work the register at a burger joint over the summer. He wants to take away jobs from adults, take away the unions that make sure those adults get a fair wage, and give them to kids (no union to make sure they're safe or earning a fair wage or working fair hours) even those now considered hazardous for kids.

Does that really sound right to you?

He has been saying this for ages. He was the one who fought so hard to put the welfare + work thing together during Clinton's years in office. Instead it's put out there like an odd statement or something said off the cuff, when actually it's a lifelong position...

67. I started working at 12 - in the summer - there was a nearby "pickle farm"
They used migrant workers to pick the cucumbers and get them ready for processing. The owners had a large farm house and 4 children under 10. There were 4 of us girls and we worked in teams of 2 usually - every other day. We were 12-14 yrs old in age. We cleaned the house, did laundry, watched the kids, and prepared home-cooked meals (3x day - we worked 6am-6pm) for the owners, managers and kids (usually 10-12 folks).

Myself and my girlfriends did this job for $1/hr. We were pretty good at it too - we all were working class kids with brothers and sisters. At the end of the summer my dad turned them into the state for labor violations & we got back pay (minimum wage was 3.25 or so back then). They also had been turned in for migrant violations so they had some serious problems there (there were migrant children younger than us working in the fields).

This is why we need minimum wages laws, unions, and strong support for labor. Poor kids always have to work - and with folks like Gingrich around it will only get worse and worse.

Yeah, let's send underprivileged children into the workforce and get rid of the unionized jobs of adults. Scott Walker must be impressed. And while we're at it, let's do away with age of consent laws and go back to the 19th century with children in brothels. Gingrich should make his campaign slogan "Bridge Into The New Gilded Age".

Why Americans can't understand what Republicans want to do to us in collusion with the ruling class is beyond comprehension.

A nation of a few controlling everything with the rest of us as serfs who will be desperate to do anything to eat. To them we are expendable commodities; they don't care if we live or die.

That is their vision of the perfect United States.

Because all regulation is bad to him. Both child labor laws and unions are burdensome regulations in the eyes of those like Gingrich and that is why Gingrich is using this particular linkage, never mind that it doesn't hold water. It's just that Gingrich doesn't have the guts to frame it using the real reason he thinks this is true.

100. there is a moderate distinction between child labor and kids cleaning their classrooms like they do
Edited on Sun Nov-20-11 11:30 AM by firehorse
in Japan.

Kids clean their schools in japan, but its not like bad or poor kids are singled out. They aren't doing it for money or for punishment. Everyone, everyday from little kids on up who go to school are all responsible for maintaining their school.

They do it because its their place to learn and it teaches them good things such as pride and to care for their school giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility. It's a similar mentality to keeping yourself clean and your home clean. I've always liked the way Japan goes about it. You are not going to see kids doing grafitti or bringing weapons like you do in the U.S. when you grow up in an environment to care for your place of learning.

Gingrich's ideas just seem like they are coming from some distorted place, and more about ripping regulations and stepping on unions toes than from a genuine place of care and respect.

119. Newt Is Not Talking About
Keeping the classroom picked up. He is specifically talking about replacing union janitors with children. He would probably demand that the schools pay these children less than minimum wage (another regulation he would like to eliminate). Janitor work can't all be done before and after normal school hours so would he pull these kids out of the classroom for emergency repairs? I do agree with your last paragraph though.

188. OK, a little clean-up
Children do need to learn the virtue of neatness in their environment, so it is reasonable to expect them to pick up their dropped crayons and large pieces of paper. But that is responsibility for what one does.

As a substitute teacher I have been told to refer any gross messes (like vomit, urine, or blood) to the janitor who has some training in potentially-hazardous materials. That is the policy for regular teachers as well. There can be some scary stuff in those messes.

213. Work without pay, of course
Economic elites have almost always sought to inculcate a work ethic without economic rewards. In a perverse parody of Marx' "From each according to his ability and to each according to his needs", they seek to extract as much toil as possible for as little as possible to those who do the work -- and they keep the difference. It's easy enough to figure what the bare needs are -- just to keep people from starving and freezing. But maximal effort? That comes from the lash. Anyone who dissents is cast off to starve slowly or die some horrific death.

Capitalism became humane when capitalists started competing for workers... and found that the best way to prevent a proletarian revolution was to make the proletariat into a market, which takes solid pay and limited hours of toil. But as the capitalists combine to preclude competition, things get dreadful for workers. We begin to see that now. The current economic elites have no virtues and no morals except for fear of their world crashing down upon them. There's nothing to teach them any ethical values. Religion for them is a tool for controlling the proles but not a guide to behavior. They have no problem with war so long as they make the profit and someone else does the dying -- and their assets remain intact.

Regardless about what anyone thinks about whether or not children should work. It would make more sense to allow their parents to be employed full time at a living wage. If you have almost all employable adults working full time who desire full time employment, employed at a living wage, only then should we be talking about employing younger children.

He doesn't seem to know much of history. Child labor laws weren't created in a vacuum by faceless bureaucrats fronting for unions, itching to squeeze every last dime from employers. They were created in response to unending tragedy and misery hoisted on the poor, especially the children of the poor who had no say in how they arrived to their lot in life.

So to suggest that we should eliminate child labor laws sounds rather ignorant of the historical roots of those laws.

What is the youngest age at which a person can be employed?
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets 14 as the minimum age for most non-agricultural work. However, at any age, youth may deliver newspapers; perform in radio, television, movie, or theatrical productions; work in businesses owned by their parents (except in mining, manufacturing or hazardous jobs); and perform babysitting or perform minor chores around a private home. Also, at any age, youth may be employed as homeworkers to gather evergreens and make evergreen wreaths.
Different age requirements apply to the employment of youth in agriculture.
Many states have enacted child labor laws, some of which may have a minimum age for employment which is higher than the FLSA. Where both the FLSA and state child labor laws apply, the higher minimum standard must be obeyed.

think how much it would save corporate America we could have sub-minimum wages...

1. Missouri state Senator Jane Cunningham has proposed a bill that would “modify” child labor laws, eliminating the prohibition on employment of children under 14.

2. Newly minted Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said in a lecture posted to his YouTube channel that Congressional laws banning child labor are forbidden by the US Constitution.

Congress decided it wanted to prohibit that practice, so it passed a law. No more child labor. The Supreme Court heard a challenge to that law, and the Supreme Court decided a case in 1918 called Hammer v. Dagenhardt,” Lee said. “In that case, the Supreme Court acknowledged something very interesting — that, as reprehensible as child labor is, and as much as it ought to be abandoned — that’s something that has to be done by state legislators, not by Members of Congress.”

Lee’s reasoning was that labor and manufacturing are “by their very nature, local activities” and not “interstate commercial transactions.” He added: “This may sound harsh, but it was designed to be that way. It was designed to be a little bit harsh.”

3. Rep. David Burns, R-Whiting, is sponsoring the bill, which also would eliminate the maximum number of hours a minor over 16 can work during school days.

Burns said the bill empowers both employers and employees and that employers would have more opportunities to hire minors.

“An employer’s got to have employees, so they can decide what they want to pay,” Burns said. “The student wants to have a job, and they can decide what they’re willing to work for.”

173. Family-owned grocery store, working at 8
I went to school, went to the store to work. No allowance. I wasn't abused, but my childhood was sacrificed. When I had my kids, I taught them how to do things and they had some easy chores, but I didn't want them to work, even around the house. Both are college grads in super responsible positions, married and just really good people. Gingrich is an idiot and he doesn't have a clue about real life.

First it was the bureacrats in the Education Department that wanted to push same sex agenda.

Then it was local school administrators pushing out prayer.

School teachers were the obvious next target.

Now the janitors are stealing from the kids.

The city trash collectors must be the last target,

Walk 10 miles,in the snow to school, too... won't that save the cost of transportation in the school district and think the added bonus is it cuts down on carbon emissions from all the school buses hence preventing global climate change....

Parents just have to make sure them kiddies is up and outtta the house by 3 a.m. so they don't miss the 8 o'clock bell....

:eyes:

(And, funny thing how Newt only suggests this for kids at POOR schools...because, of course, you would never want children of HIS class to have to clean anything...)

Basically, Newt wants to teach poor kids the "three r's"(two of which are actually spelling errors, for the record)and the "K,Y, And P"(Know Your Place).

That's because they wouldn't. They'd get paid whatever the school board -- which are being taken over by conservatives -- thought they "deserved." The kids would be lucky to get half minimum wage, and "they should be grateful for that!"

The main point is that it's another union-busting move by a Republican.

199. Mr. Grinch
You're a mean one, Mister Grinch
You really are a heel,
You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mister Grinch,

You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

You're a monster, Mister Grinch,
Your heart's an empty hole,
Your brain is full of spiders, you've got garlic in your soul, Mister Grinch,

I wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You're a vile one, Mister Grinch,
You have termites in your smile,
You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mister Grinch,

Given a choice between the two of you I'd take the ... seasick crocodile!

You nauseate me, Mister Grinch,
With a nauseous super "naus",
You're a crooked dirty jockey and you drive a crooked hoss, Mister Grinch,

You're a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich, with arsenic sauce!

You're a foul one, Mister Grinch,
You're a nasty wasty skunk,
Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk, Mister Grinch,

The three words that describe you are as follows, and I quote, "Stink, Stank, Stunk!"

You're a rotter, Mister Grinch,
You're the king of sinful sots,
Your heart's a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots, Mister Grinch,

Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots!

"...he might keep his eye upon his clerk, who in a dismal little cell beyond, a sort of tank, was copying letters. Scrooge had a very small fire, but the clerk's fire was so very much smaller that it looked like one coal. But he couldn't replenish it, for Scrooge kept the coal-box in his own room; and so surely as the clerk came in with the shovel, the master predicted that it would be necessary for them to part. "

217. I think I've seen where this is leading to...
To Newt, an impoverished healthy child well nursed is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked or boiled; and he makes no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragoust.

Unlike Swift, Newt would actually eat poor people's babies.
