Arab League rejects Syrian demand to change peace plan
Source: BBC

The Arab League has rejected a demand by Syria to alter its plan for ending the country's conflict, which has reportedly left at least 3,500 dead.

It dismissed Syria's demand to amend its proposal for a 500-strong observer mission to be sent to the country.

The Arab League's deadline for Syria to end its crackdown passed overnight with no sign of violence abating.

The Arab League plan, seen by the world as the best hope for resolving the conflict peacefully, seems to have crashed in flames, the BBC's Jim Muir reports.

1. This is great that the AL is taking the lead on this instead of US or EU.
The less prominent role we take in these kinds of situations the better.

5. Saudi domination of such issues is great?
Once upon a time the Arab League may have represented a somewhat progressive, often revolutionary trend in regional politics, but that died with Nasser. Now it is dominated by the wahhabist dictators club grouped around Saudi Arabia and it's satellites--Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, etc. This club of extremely conservative dictators serves the US agenda, so the end result is really just the same.

2. It was obvious all along that Syria wouldn't accept any monitoring of its actions
As you've posted before, NATO won't intervene and Russia and China prevented the UN from adopting even moderate sanctions on Syria.

NATO has no inclination to get involved, especially after conducting military operations in Libya. The European partners are stretched, and Obama's policy of 'leading from behind' put them on notice that if they want military interventions, they'll have to pay for them.

Kind of ironic that Obama was criticized, even by the Left, on something that advanced the cause of peace.

But FU*CK the international news, what I want to know is, HOW'S YOUR NEW BABY?

Thanks a lot for asking, she's doing great!

(It's a bit out of focus so you need to squint to see it well, but I thought it was worth sharing as it was the first time I got a photo of her smiling.)
