French troops could protect UN personnel in Iraq: Powell

Fri Apr 30, 3:20 AM ET Add Politics - AFP to My Yahoo!

LONDON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) said that French troops could be used to provide security for United Nations (news - web sites) officials who are likely to oversee the electoral process in war-torn Iraq (news - web sites).

"I'm not expecting any French troops, but there might be other things that France would be able to do," Powell said in an interview with the Times newspaper in London.

"We will have a need for the protection of UN personnel in the country, in order to have that vital presence that we've all talked about and everybody has encouraged," he said.

"We will need security for the UN electoral officials who will be going through the country to register people and get ready for the elections at the beginning of next year," he said.

5. Powell is a tool
Powell dismissed talk that the US-led coalition was flagging.

"When people start talking about quagmires -- one thing that is not a quagmire is Saddam Hussein (news - web sites). He's gone. Horrible man. Horrible regime," he told the Times.

you didn't feel that way in 1988 Bowell:

Powell condemned Saddam's "use of mustard and nerve gas against the Kurds in 1988" that killed "Five thousand men, women and children." True, but he did so with the blessing at the time of many Reaganites who now serve Bush - including Powell. In 1988, "Secretary of State Colin Powell was then the national security adviser who orchestrated Ronald Reagan's decision to give Hussein a pass for gassing the Kurds," says former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Peter Galbraith in the Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/globe/magazine/2002/1215/coverstory_entire.htm)

8. Saddam Hussein may be gone, but his spirit lives on
In the torture chambers, rape rooms, and mass graves brought to Iraq courtesy of Powell and his friends. Every day the stench of Powell's hypocrisy grows more sickening.

State Department is a Sales Office. Go to any Xerox or Botox sales office and check out their statistics. Here's what it would say on their bulletin board:

"Yay, we leased 1,200 copiers this month! We've been in Hong Kong, and they might lease 10 copiers. We've been pushing hard in Sri Lanka, and they've promised to rent 5 copiers. Even Pakistan returned a sales call. We're sure we've got another sale. Wow. What a month.

These guys are the doctors of spin. They make a phone call to some foreign minister, and it's "Yes, we've made initial contact. Looks promising, yes". No, no agreements signed, but we're sure they'll work with us".

7. Well .. where is that "Horrible man"??
He's "gone"?? I've read that the cabal is planning to start his trial in October this year, a month before the election. When is someone going to ask Powell, where the hell is he? And what plans are there to prosecute him? Just "gone" don't get it - doofus.

9. NATO, France, UN resolutions
Why don't they just admit they screwed it up and get this right before more people die. If they'd just come out with it already, and put the plan the UN wants in place, we could get on with this in a week. Instead they're going to try to save face and back door it. And I would bet other countries will eventually go through that door because they're more concerned about the Iraqi people than embarrassing George Bush.
