Training team despatched to Iraq

May 03, 2004
AUSTRALIA has sent a specialist army team to Iraq to help train local troops, Defence Minister Robert Hill said today.

Senator Hill said the Australian team of 40 soldiers, who left today, would provide training in weapons, leadership and drill procedures for three Iraqi army battalions and a brigade headquarters staff.

The Australian team will be supported by a 13-member security detachment and two extra Australian light armoured vehicles.
