monorail route on the current layout of Seattle Center.Seattle's new monorail will cross right through the Seattle Center, City Council members decided yesterday in an emotional session in which members tackled the most controversial aspect of the proposed route.
In a 5-4 vote, the majority agreed with Mayor Greg Nickels, Center officials and neighborhood groups that putting the 60-foot-high rail crossing north of the International Fountain would bring more visitors to the Center without ruining the biggest open space in the central city area.
They voted against the wishes of a city advisory panel and several Center advocates who had lobbied strenuously to have the West Seattle-to-Crown Hill line cross on Mercer Street, north of the Center.
