Fla. to Purge Felons From Voter Lists
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040506/ap_on_re_us/florida_voter_rolls_1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida has ordered a statewide purge of freed felons from its voter roles, an election-year directive that some say would disenfranchise up to 40,000 people.

Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings said Thursday that Gov. Jeb Bush's administration was simply complying with federal election law, and the secretary of state's office said safeguards were in place to prevent targeting the wrong people.

I don't trust these people

3. I vote we purge 100% of Florida voters.
After the last time, they should have to spend this election in the penalty box.

Too bad Greg Palast just released a revised "Best Democracy Money Can Buy" -- he may need to do it again in six more months.

12. Many more
purges and they'll have no more voters in Florida. Wonder if they put the ones erroneously purged in 2000 back on the rolls? Jeb and George are not Bushes, they are more like Foxglove and Kudzu.

22. and don't forget the FUTURE felons on that list, too.
I forget how many there were, but that part blew me away.

Wasn't one of the county supervisor of elections on the list? Seem to remember reading an article about one county that was refusing to even use it after he found his own name on it.

6. What can be done to address this?
Why don t Fla Dems get involved & try to oversee this?

Why not the Dem party? At least call attention to it, & get lawyers involved, to make sure it is legal.

and ends...

One good thing is that I doubt Kerry will put all his effort into Florida. Putting all the eggs into the Florida basket was a mistake the Gore campaign made.

I still wouldn't completely write it off, but the odds are against it being a fair election down there.

11. Same shit different year
This is what we have to look forward to from now on unless we all rise up and take this country back.....get our democracy back. This is their way of assuring them their long reign of power. We HAVE to take action and do something about it. Period.

17. They will only get away with it
If the Dems let them get away with it!

Each state party needs to get involved in this.

It will not matter HOW MANY votes we cast, if they do not count.

Same for electronic voting machines.

19. Florida is a corrupt crime family state.
Who would be surprised by this?

Consider it lost. Ohio is the game.

20. Geeze
'simply complying with federal election law'?

What is the 'Federal Election Law' that states ex-felons are not allowed to vote? Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought that was a state issue.

21. Yeah. Not all states do that.
And I believe it's against the law to ban voters that did their crimes in states that don't keep ex-felons from voting. Correct me if I'm wrong, as I might be.

23. I believe that...
... the voter registration list review was written into HAVA, but given the way that Florida engaged in the last one, there will likely be massive errors.

I, too, have heard nothing about whether or not Florida has reinstated the wrongfully purged voters from the 2000 list. The state said in 2000 that it would correct the list by the 2002 election, and when the 2002 election arrived, the state said they hadn't gotten around to it.
