Rangel Introduces Eight Impeachment Articles Against Rumsfeld
Edited on Fri May-07-04 01:58 PM by WilliamPitt
RANGEL INTRODUCES IMPEACHMENT ARTICLES AGAINST RUMSFELD

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), a lead critic of the Bush administration's policy in Iraq, introduced eight articles of impeachment Thursday against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld amid Congressional outrage over the Pentagon's handling of charges of prison abuse by U.S. soldiers.

“I think that this rises to the point that it’s a high crime and misdemeanor if he disappointed the president, kept information from the Congress and kept this information from the American people,” Rangel said on the House floor.

Among the prospective charges against Rumsfeld included in the Rangel’s impeachment measure are that the Defense chief “contributed to an atmosphere of lawlessness” that permitted the abuses to take place, and “abdicated his role” in allowing such a breakdown in discipline.

The articles also charge that Rumsfeld “urged and oversaw” the removal of Saddam Hussein under a “false premise” — namely, that the United States was under threat of “imminent” attack from weapons of mass destruction and that Iraq’s dictator was in league with al Qaeda in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

3. Will impeachment lead him to prison?
Can't he be charged with crimes for the shit he's pulled?

Covering up information,...suppressing/hiding information is a crime.

29. President cannot pardon in cases of impeachment.
"...and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment."

But if Rummy were impeached (removed from office), then tried and convicted of crimes in a criminal court, the president could pardon the conviction on the crimes. The impeachment cannot be reversed or pardoned, however.

27. Impeachment removes people from office
and prevents them from holding office in the future.

From the US Constitution, Article I, Sec. III

Clause 7: Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

30. Gimme a break
...some did, some didn't and etc. Stop generalising. Sometimes Rangel is on the right track. Sometimes he isn't. Leave black and white simplicity to the Bushites.

The illusion of morality is very very dangerous. They might make this symbolic gesture to save the illusion of the Chalabi led 'war crimes trials'.

22. Its been easy to sight reasons to impeach Bush, there are many..
but the impeachment of Rumsfeld will be the beginning of the end of Bush too.

I believe Rangle has grabbed this opportunity to open the door to expose much of the Bush Cabinet secrecy that protects Bush.

Rumsfeld's impeachment hearings will certainly expose what couldn't have been touched with the proverbial ten foot pole.

Will Rummeys impeachment hearings lead to Bush's impeachment hearings?
Who else of the Bush Cabinet will follow.

The domino theory of exposing Bush has to start someplace. Rummeys mess right now has opened the impeachment door enough for Rangle and a host of others to break through.
Go for it. Clean up the White House.

The protection that surrounds Bush has a weak link and perhaps Rangle has found it with Runny.

This shoudl be interesting.
I believe this will drag out long past the Nov election, when we will see a dem majority, a dem President, and new Attorney General to assist Rangle's cause.

Praise Be!

34. barely
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2004_record&page=H2728&position=all

see H res. 629 :

By Mr. RANGEL:
H. Res. 629. A resolution impeaching Donald
Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense; to the
Committee on the Judiciary.

Can't find the text of the resolution. The only thing else I find is press releases announcing his intent to introduce impeachment articles - you'll find the press releases on democrat.com and on Rangel's congressional homepage. Since the house basically closed for business early on thursday and won't be back till tuesday, I think I'll look again tuesday.

Anyone have a better interface to that frwebgate or other access to the congressional record? I found that by accident and it's not really an interface.

for the Dems to redeem themselves from being the go along with the NeoFascists crowd. How many Dems will grow a spine and demand that this impeachment go forward? My guess: Maybe 10%. The rest will never develope a spine.

32. This is all well and good
But it creates yet another problem, and that is that Rumsfeld simply becomes the latest scapegoat in the regime, without touching the most responsible people, Cheny and Bush, not to mention Asscroft.

35. I thought that too
but I think it is a start and rummy is not a brave or strong man. I wonder if he might spill some beans if he thinks he is going to take the fall for the top three. And give rummy the business during these next 6 months, keep finding more and more crap on this administration and that can only help get Kerry elected. It would be hard for the media to ignore impeachment hearings.

If it all wasn't so horrible, it would be funny seeing them squirm and get caught up in all their lies. They were just too stupid and greedy.

33. Rumsfeld knew exactly where the WMD were, Right!
Rumsfeld did know exactly what Michael Canavan knew while commander of the Delta Force and now head of Security with the FAA.

I think Richard Clark knows much more than what he already has revealed.

36. An all-purpose impeachment article

That one can be used against every high-ranking official in the White House and the Pentagon, and a good many at the State Department as well.

Git 'em.
