THREE rogue soldiers got away with spearheading a sickening campaign of abuse against Iraqi PoWs, a British trooper claimed yesterday.


Soldier C told the Mirror that suspects had "10 kids of crap" beaten out of them and said officers only stepped in when the appalling beatings got too heavy.


Believing it his duty to expose the shameful acts he has witnessed and see the guilty punished, he told the Mirror: "It was a few bad NCOs who encouraged it - and the others just followed their lead.


"In battle situations when you capture someone, you're supposed to keep up the shock of capture so you can extract more things out of prisoners, like important information.

THEY SAID: Why does the soldier appear to be armed with an SA80 Mk1 rifle not issued to troops in Iraq? Why is there no serial number on the foregrip?


SOLDIER C: It looks like a standard issue A3 used in Iraq. The photo would need to be better quality to see a number.


THEY SAID: Why does the picture appear to have been taken in a Bedford truck never deployed in Iraq?


SOLDIER C: I saw a Bedford truck. There was one at Basra Palace. I can't tell if this was a Bedford or DAF.


THEY SAID: Why is the prisoner wearing a shirt with an Iraqi flag in Shia Basra? He would have been killed within two minutes on the streets.


SOLDIER C: The shirt was very popular. I often saw locals wearing it. To suggest they would be killed is nonsense.


THEY SAID: Why is the soldier wearing a floppy hat not used operationally in Iraq?


SOLDIER C: I wore one for most of my tour in Iraq. They were popular because it was sweltering under a helmet.


THEY SAID: Why does the soldier have such soft, clean hands and clothes?

2. Yes, I remember

The Mirror was attacked as a puerile tabloid. It is a tabloid, of course, though of a much different species to US tabloids. No paper that prints the first-rate journalism of John Pilger can be lightly dismissed.

Although it's hardly a cover-to-cover read, the Mirror publishes some good work alongside the dross and without doubt its heart is in the right place as an anti-imperialist newspaper. In that respect it is far more open to skeptical inquiry than such establishment bullshit-swallowers as the New York Times, which has yet to apologize to Americans for all the phony WMD stories it ran prior to the Iraq invasion.
