Two children among abused prisoners: report
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/05/08/1083911442998.html

Another time, al-Baz said, he saw a 15-year-old Iraqi boy, who was ill, being forced to hold two heavy cans of water and run up and down a corridor. If the boy stopped, he was beaten with a stick by an American soldier, ITV quoted al-Baz as saying.

"He collapsed from exhaustion, so they stripped him and poured cold water over him," al-Baz said.

A naked, hooded man was brought into the area and placed face-to-face with the boy. When the man's hood was removed, the boy was shocked to see his father and collapsed, al-Baz said.

The American soldiers "then forced his father to wear a bra and a pair of knickers" and laughed, al-Baz said.

2. Rumsfeld's best intelligence in the last 3 years tells him
"there is more of this and it's bad..."

The US deserves to get their asses collectively and brutally kicked out of Iraq.

12. Interesting, sad, and disturbing
Thanks for sharing that story link, shraby.

From the article:
The objective of the protocol is "to establish a system of regular visits undertaken by independent and national bodies to places where people are deprived of their liberty, in order to prevent torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment."

The protocol to the treaty passed late Wednesday by a vote of 35-8 with 10 abstentions in the U.N. Economic and Social Council. The United States abstained.

4. What the hell kind of excuse would they have to have children in custody?
I can't believe that with all the stories coming out, there are only 7 people being courtmartialed and 6 reprimanded. It boggles the mind. There is no way that this should be so restricted. It sounds like prison guards everywhere are participoating in acts, which even of they would not be called torture, were definitely abuses. In Guantanamo, feeding the prisoners bad food, using prostitutes to taunt religious men, and keeping them for having access to water so that they could wash before prayer, in addition to many other abuses; someone needs to be accountable for all of this

And why do they have to detain so many? They're afraid to let them out in case they go back to fighting against the Americans? Well in war, you can't capture everyone! You fight, some die, you stop, then you start again another day! You don't capture everyone you don't kill!

Bush is responsible for it all!

8. During the siege of Fallujah, any male over 10 was considered military age
That is how I recall hearing it - over 10 and under 50. Certainly, 15 would have been considered a potential fighter. They were preventing all 'military age' men from leaving the city before the attacks. Thank God that the siege was called off, more or less, before the thing escalated into even greater death and destruction, which would have included plenty of teenage boys.

Yes, I've heard about the Stamford Report or whatever. But I still ask myself what kind of person can do these things.

11. I am so with you, I don't know how much more I can stand to hear.
This is so incredibly harsh and it hurts us all so much. I'm not up for much more. Damn everyone one of us all. Damn our Senate and our House for not listening to us all sooner. They want to feign lack of information and knowledge now?!#$$

No Way! We have known of these problems, these crimes, these abuses for months. This comes as no surprise. Stop feigning surprise and shock, you just simply were all caught with your pants down. You have no recovery, in my very humble opinion.

I curse each and every one of you CongressCritters. You all need to resign before we run you out of town.

7. Drip. Drip. Drip.
One thing I was wondering when Rummy was defending their reactions with "We told you!" was where we were looking when it was "announced". It took some time to look at the archives (GD pages 900 and up). The brouhaha was Paul O'Niell at the time.

And here's the thing...there were a few threads about how horrible (as in tired and drained) Bush looked and more confused than usual. Hmmmm. Bush knew. They all did. They just got caught. And twice today, Rummy stated the "real crime" was that a confidential report was leaked.

So there's more of this unconscionable stuff to come.

10. Bush should be held accountable
Though I always knew Bush and his cronies were capable of pure unadulterated evil, I can't believe that the soldiers of my own country would take part in such actions in such a wholesale fashion.

Thank goodness that there are still some that live by some code of ethics and went ahead and revealed the atrocities.

There is no way that Bush and Rumsfeld could not have known about the abuses. The "real" crime as far as Bush is concerned was that Rumsfeld did not keep it better hidden.

The only question left is whether Bush and his cabinet are eventually made to answer for war crimes.

Perhaps Bush and Rumsfeld are truly not guilty, but that should be a question for an objective international court to decide.

Hopefully, the American people hold Bush accountable and remove him from office.

Ugh, this is overwhelming. It's coming down like an avalanche now. We'll just have to wait and see whether John Q. Public actually cares.

14. Future terrorist.
That will be our greatest export to the world in the coming future - terrorists with a burning desire to set off a bomb that kills as many Americans as possible.

Where once there were hundreds, now there are probably thousands...
