U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell,
R-Colo., in a Jan. 7 photo.Washington - Federal investigators have taken over the probe into kickbacks and other alleged wrongdoing in the office of retiring Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, his office announced Friday.
The Senate Ethics Committee has been investigating the allegations at Campbell's request, but a Justice Department probe raises the stakes because it could yield criminal charges.
Political experts say the criminal investigation may have influenced the Ignacio Republican's decision to retire early next year, after the end of his current term. A source familiar with the investigation said at least one FBI agent began questioning potential witnesses more than a month ago, and that the Justice Department took its first official action in the case - recusing local prosecutors - the day before Campbell announced his retirement.
