U.S. Soldier to Face May Trial for Iraq Prison Abuse (Public Trial)
U.S. Soldier to Face May Trial for Iraq Prison Abuse
Sun May 9, 2004 10:07 AM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The first court martial of a U.S. soldier charged with abusing Iraqi detainees in the Abu Ghraib prison west of Baghdad will start on May 19 and be open to the public, a U.S. military spokesman said Sunday.

Specialist Jeremy Sivits was charged with maltreatment of detainees, conspiracy to maltreat subordinates and detainees and dereliction of duty for negligently failing to protect detainees from cruelty, abuse and maltreatment, he said.

The court martial could be held in the heavily guarded Conference Center to give media maximum access, Kimmit said.

Sorry Kimmet, won't work. Let's start talking about General Barbara Fast.

1. Well...here we go...

..This will be the beginning of a great unraveling, because all of these lower level officers are going to squeal big time -- as well they should.

2. How about a public hanging in the stadium
Though I do also support a real crackdown on the commanding officers who allowed all this to take place.

3. One of the other MPs (Frederick's) lawyer on NightLine last week

said that bringing charges against these MPs was the stupidest (his word) thing the Army could have done because it will open a huge can of worms with massive political implications.

I could only assume that he meant this will lead to disclosure of private contractor activities and their ties to repukes as well as all of this being done under the full knowledge and approval of higher ups in the administration.

4. Ummmm...I doubt this specialist dreamed all this shit up.
He may, however, by under influence of death if he says anything much; you know, one of those unfortunate jail "suicides."

We had one in this county about 30 years ago. Mexican immigrant feller got arrested and resisted. He killed hisself by banging his head against the glass in the door of his padded cell until he was dead.

This version was OK'd by the local DA, the Texas Attorney General and Richard Nixon's US Justice Department.\

Sorry for the little diversion down memory lane, but Kimmitt is going to have to do better than this for a show trial!

6. My guess is Mummy and Daddy
won't be voting for Bush this time around. There's going to be bitterness among the military about who gets charged. And who doesn't. Sivits father is former military. He maintains the breakdown in leadership led to the treatment of the detainees. If too many of the grunts get busted while Rummy and his henchmen walk, there will be a backlash from people who are generally very right-wing. Maybe they'll finally see the cold greed and self-interest that is the Bush administration.

7. Fucking Neo-con puke heads, It's not solders, they were following orders.
They are gonna blame this whole thing on 6 to 12 solders and use them as their pawns. I really hope the Stanford experiment is brought in to these bogus trials.

8. this will keep our minds off the big wigs who told this guy to ignore
the Geneva Conventions. He took the pictures, so of course he's going to be punished for allowing the crimes to come to light.

It'll be another media circus while Rummy and Wolfie wait out their terms prior to a post-election resignation party.

Cold cynical and cruel.

13. He should be punished
There is little doubt that the American soldiers we have seen in those horrendous pictures are guilty of prisoner abuse. "Just following orders" is no excuse; they KNOW what they did was wrong. That said, those who gave the alleged orders need to be punished as well, if it is found they did tell the MPs to commit those acts.

9. Just smoke and mirrors, folks. This farce will be a cover up for the real
perpetrators, who will just walk with a smile on their face and more money in their pockets.
