Gee taking heat, even from wife, over VU's decision to honor Rice

By MICHAEL CASS
Staff Writer

A group of Vanderbilt University students and employees will tell Chancellor Gordon Gee today that the university's decision to honor national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, an architect of the Bush administration's decision to go to war with Iraq, is ''inappropriate and incomprehensible.''

It's a complaint Gee has already heard from at least one of the group's members: his wife, Constance.

Constance Gee, an associate professor of public policy and education at the university her husband runs, is one of about 150 students, faculty and staff members protesting Vanderbilt's plans to give Rice an award for ''distinguished public service'' when she speaks to this year's graduates Thursday. Vanderbilt has about 10,000 students and thousands of employees.

Vanderbilt officials, led by Gordon Gee, said Rice is clearly a key figure in American life who is worth honoring for her career accomplishments.

9. ANOTHER awards scandal for Condi?
Remember when some black organization gave an award to both her and Aaron "Boondocks" MacGruder? I guess the organization didn't know about the Boondocks annual "Most Embarrassing Black People" awards!

10. This Gee guy, I believe, used to be president of
Ohio State University. If this is indeed the same person, he was the speaker at Florida State University's commencement two years ago. That name rings a bell with me; I was there, getting my doctoral hood.

12. Yes, that is indeed him. (See my post #10).
I just checked out his biographical information. I recognized him from his photo, and, yes, he is a former president at Ohio State.

13. To exactly what "career accomplishments" is Gee referring??...
Lying under oath to the 911 Commission?

Participating in the planning for an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation?

High-ranking member of the NeoCon Junta, the far rightwing organization that seized power in December 2000?

So many comments...so little time this morning.

14. Who comes up with these ideas?
I'm still stunned to speechlessness that Yale opted to give the shrub an honorary PhD, at the ceremony for which, he proudly proclaimed that he was living proof that even flunkie C students could go on to become president. This is Yale, for god's sake, not Regent University, they're supposed to stand for quality of scholarship, not ideological extremism and academic mediocrity. What moran came up with the idea of giving an honory PhD to a guy who could barely even pass his undergraduate courses, much less succeed at a graduate level? And Vanderbuilt's wanting to do the same thing? Again, who comes up with these brainstorms? Does the decision lie solely within the discretion of an indovidual university president to make the decisions, even if they're insulting to students who actually had to work hard and be bright to get their degrees?
