Lawyer: England Ostracized at Fort Bragg
Lawyer: England Ostracized at Fort Bragg
By VICKI SMITH, Associated Press Writer

KEYSER, W.Va. - The Army reservist whose leering poses with Iraqi inmates have become the most notorious images of the prison-abuse scandal is living a solitary existence at Fort Bragg, where other soldiers avoid her, the woman's attorney said Friday.

Pfc. Lynndie England is "stressed out and overwhelmed," said family attorney Roy Hardy, who speaks with the 21-year-old soldier nearly every day.

"She feels like she's being isolated at Fort Bragg," he said. "She's almost an object of curiosity."

England is reluctant to enter common areas at the base or to socialize. She does her daily physical training alone, Hardy said.

"She's the poster girl," Hardy said. "When somebody does a cartoon, she's in it. When somebody does a skit on 'Saturday Night Live,' she's in it."

1. Many in the military will see her as the
symbol of the disgrace... never mind the blame is quite higher.

3. Absolutely true, but she's still responsible for her actions.
What WAS she thinking....

20. She was thinking
I'm in the Big Show, Iraq, with about a 95% male force, so to fit in and be one of the guys I'll follow orders without question.

Sad, but true. She didn't rise above it because she came from poverty and was now mixing with many from more substantial backgrounds and probably figured what was happening was an okay thing. It's the commanders not in the photos that need to be prosecuted with her.

14. I see her as "a" symptom not the symbol
I blame Bush on down.......

I still ask myself what were those soldiers thinking?...

Yes, she has been made the poster child for American war crimes...but those crimes are real...as her own guilt is real.

2. Well, it is sad in one way...
But: Welcome to The Consequences of Your Actions, Lynndie. None of us live in a vacuum, nor are we issued a permenent pair of skates at birth.

I suggest you turn State's Evidence. Salvage something of your dignity, no matter how little can be salvaged.

15. Exactly
Hard to believe but there are actually DUers who have pity for her. I got into a beef with one of them last night. I say it's a waste of time to feel sorry for this lowlife. They say I'm "trying to force" my opinion on them. I say they're full of crap.

5. Sorry, no sympathy here...
she is responsible for her actions which were horrific, imo. I can only hope that ALL who are responsible, top to bottom, are called to account.

7. she should be ostracized.
Her statements in interviews reflect zero remorse. She claims cover because she was allegedly following orders. She says they did nothing wrong. Even if she is unable to recognize the difference between humane and inhumane treatment of fellow human beings, she should know that the majority of other human beings (Inhofe and Limbaugh excluded), think her actions were heinous. If that knowledge comes through the ostracizing of her peers, so be it.

9. She still bears some responsibility
I firmly believe that she was following orders. However, these were the type of orders that she should have refused to obey. She has to bear some of the responsibility here.

27. In my opinion, she bears complete
responsibility for her own actions. As far as just obeying orders, first, that hasn't been a legitimate defense since Nuremberg. Secondly, she sure looked like she was enjoying the hell out of herself in those pictures. I don't think those kinds of facial expressions can be faked.

This is not to absolve the higher ups from their responsibility. I think they're all guilty, from Bush all the way down to Lynndie

19. She should be
BANISHED from the United States and sent to Iraq for her trial.. why isn't she there NOW?

Why isn't she in the BRIG or JAIL awaiting her trial? WHat kind of bullshit is this?!!

If they think you robbed a bank you get arrested and JAILED until you have a trial..

she is getting special treatment and now the media wants us to shed TEARS FOR HER?

She's a pig, a slut, a worthless piece of white trash and justice will NEVER be served for what she's done.

And I am sure that was planned, since she knew the shit was going to hit the fan.

24. She was a party to countless crimes, and we don't know the half of them
Yes, Bush, Rummy, Meyers, etc. all need to be punished as well, and their crimes are infinitely worse (they chose the war, led it and lied for it). Still, Ms. England probably caused immense suffering to many Iraqis, and the fact that she was poor, or wanted to fit in cannot excuse this. It may mitigate in her favor a bit, but only a bit. What we really need is testimony from the tortured prisoners, and victim impact statements to put her role into perspective. Of course that will never happen, as there will only be victors' justice done, and she is one of the victors.
