Spain's ex-prime minister warns of threats during US election
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/8677203.htm

ORANGE, Calif. - Terrorists will seek to affect the outcome of the U.S. presidential election as they did in Spain with the Madrid train attacks, the former Spanish prime minister warned Saturday.

Jose Maria Aznar, making his first U.S. visit since voters ousted his conservative party days after the March 11 train bombings, did not say where terrorists would likely strike, nor did he specify what outcome they would desire in the presidential election, but he described the attempt as a certainty.

"It's important to realize that the terrorists will do all they can to disrupt the upcoming U.S. election," Aznar said on the second day of a visit to California. "They are going to do everything in their power to have the United States fail."

The former prime minister, who is scheduled to meet with President Bush in Washington on Tuesday, made the remarks during a visit to Chapman University to receive the school's Global Citizen Medal at a gala dinner.

2. My opinion, though, is that they want Bush to win.
George is "good for business".

3. It does seem a bit counter-productive, no?
I mean, if the election is *disrupted*...boom, martial law, Bush stays in power. Unless, as you say, that's really their aim...

Hmmm...very odd indeed...:tinfoilhat:

4. This is a politically motivated thing
I'll bet dollars to donuts that next week the wingnut media whores will say that the terrorists want Kerry to win and that's why they will try to disrupt the election which is complete bull shit because Bush is going to lose anyway.

5. Spreading the lie
He had already lost. The terrorist bombings had nothing to do with it.

8. Why is he back here & why isn't Bush meeting with the new prime minister?
Looks as if Bush going to do his bidness with the old lapdog, since he knows the new one's not going to be his fool.

That's simply wrong. The people of Spain elected Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. I guess Bush never learned to respect the will of the people, anyway.....

From the article JoFerret posted:
Aznar gently rebuked one student, 21-year-old Ian Peckham of Walnut Creek, whose paper suggested that the United States threatens world peace and stability with a unilateral approach to foreign policy.

"America needs to show more humility to Europe and the international community," Peckham told the ex-prime minister seated next to him on stage.

"It's very interesting, very intelligently stated," a laughing Aznar told Peckham. "But I don't agree with you ... You're unfair to your own country. Your country is better than you said."

"There's no doubt in my mind that we should allow the world worst leaders to hold America hostage, to threaten our peace, to threaten our friends and allies with the world's worst weapons."

10. remember they have rush through legislature on what to do if half of congr
congress is dead.......the only reason for this....is a plan already in place to make something happen again.......

Why would they need such a plan if there was not something in the works

11. The failure of the U.S.
has virtually nothing to do with terrorists at this point. We're doing a goddamn good job of it all by ourselves. We consume consume consume, crapping all over the rest of the world in the process; we take take take take take; we refuse to educate ourselves about what's happening in the world, apart from reality TV and soap operas; we allow the Supreme Court to pick a greedy, kill-happy warmonger to run our country, drain our treasury, deplete our social programs and resources, and pollute our land.

Note to terrorists: we'll fail on our own at the rate we're going, thank you very much. We don't need any help from you guys!

15. Patsified, right on. 100% agree.

Both federal and personal debt have become unsustainable. The only thing keeping our nostrils above water is that the debt is being propped up by foreign money. There will come a time, and I don't think it will be long, when others won't keep funneling money to us.

At that point, we become a third world country.

I also think that oil prices will have a lot to do with it. Peak oil is not more than a decade away so the price of gas will just keep going up. I wouldn't be surprised to see gas over three dollars a gallon next summer. That will have a massive braking effect on this economy. And we have * to thank for all this.

12. If there's a terrorist attack...
there WON'T be any elections.

And if there were, there would likely be massive support for Bush in a show of "unity".
