Navy Looks to Blimps As Anti-Terror Tool

MANASSAS, Va. -- The military is looking to something old as a new weapon in the war on terrorism: blimps.

The blimps wouldn't be like those that hover over football stadiums and concerts. These would be equipped with cutting-edge sensors and high-resolution cameras that could scour the landscape or oceans.

Think of it as a 200-foot-long eye in the sky.

"What is increasingly happening is people are coming under routine surveillance without good cause," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the technology and liberty program at the American Civil Liberties Union. "It's no longer fanciful to talk about a '1984'-like society."

I'm waiting for them to become commercial again. I want to go Europe on one.

2.  Yes!
I always thought blimps were cool. If they could put in
mini-bedrooms and baths, this would be a great way to travel.

Now I'll have to look up how many people were on the
Hindenberg and how long the flight took.

3. It's like the Truman Show
Soon you'll turn on your TV and you'll hear ed mcmahon singing "Smile, you're on Commie Channel" And you'll see yourself sitting in your living room with a glass of dissorano on the rocks watching TV... you turn, look outside, and 200 feet in the air is a blimp, eyeing you in the privacy of your own home.

Der Kommisar's in town

4. How is that different from now?
When I'm in the city, they've got a helicopter that comes and looks in my window.

Of course, they could be doing the nude scene from "Blue Thunder".
