British Fury at US 'Kill and Kill Again' Policy - Report

A new report claimed today there was a growing split between Britain and the United States on policies and tactics in Iraq, as Tony Blair reaffirmed his commitment to efforts in the war-torn country.

A senior British officer suggested releasing many of the prisoners detained by the coalition, but saw his suggestion shot down by American commanders, according to a US magazine.

And the British military was said to be increasingly upset at the willingness of US troops to “kill, kill and kill again”, according to a former British officer.

According to Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, the general formerly in charge of the notorious Abu Ghraib prison, where abuse took place, a British officer present said: “The best solution is to find a way to release these people instead of building more and more detention facilities.”

Brig Gen Karpinski told the May 24 edition of Newsweek magazine of the US officers’ reaction: “They looked at him like, ’Who asked you?’,” she said.

The British chief of the General Staff, Sir Michael Jackson, said there was “military friction” last month when he gave evidence to a parliamentary committee.

As a result of the growing rift, British commanders are becoming increasingly reluctant to commit troops to zones not under British control, according to Newsweek.
