Can Arnold run a state economy?
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 08:18 PM by dArKeR
PERHAPS SCHWARZENEGGER’S best business experience has been running the “business of Arnold.”
You don’t come to this country with a thick accent and dubious acting skills, and turn yourself into a multi-millionaire without some sort of financial acumen. But does he have what it takes to be CEO of the world’s fifth-largest economy suffering from a $38 billion deficit?
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria but came to the U.S. in 1968, with only a few bucks in his pocket but plenty of muscle on his frame. He was a bodybuilder who put himself through business school, developing a fitness business after repeatedly winning top competitions. He began investing successfully in real estate, and was a millionaire long before he became a movie star.

Since going Hollywood, Schwarzenegger has kept his hand in real estate — with seemingly a sixth sense to developing and turning undervalued properties. His holdings stretch from chunks of Santa Monica, Calif. to a Denver entertainment center to a shopping mall in Columbus, Ohio. He owns a 747 which he leases to an airline. And he’s gotten into the restaurant business, opening Schatzi on Main Street in Santa Monica in the early 90s. His investment in Planet Hollywood did not go so well, and he pulled out in the late 1990s when the chain went into bankruptcy.

I think Arnie could do about the same as Junior in reguards to killing and the economy.
---------

Jane Wells,

I think this was bias reporting because I don't think Arnie made these investments. A consulting firm probably did. Just Give Me Some Truth!

3. In fairness to Arnold
He might make a great governor. By the same token, he just as easily might be a horrendous governor. For CA voters, it's basically a crap shoot. With California beset by a monumental fiscal crisis, why would the voters entrust the governorship to someone with no gov't experience? That said, Arnold is almost certain to get the most votes of any of the replacement candidates for the simple reason that there is a lot of stupid people out there.

See nothing wrong with it, if the people are not front people for Pros. They bring new things in to the office.

4. Nobody is saying that Schwarzenegger is stupid........
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 08:02 PM by Cappadonna
...........what we ARE saying is that no matter how much property he's flipped or how much money he has, he still no more qualified to run the world's fifth largest economy than I am is to run a nuclear reactor.

Basically, Arnold Schwarzenegger running and winning the governship show just how far our nation has fallen. Basically, we have degraded political office to a free for all for any goober with a enough money to smear their face on TV. This isn't just against Schwarzenegger, its also a blast against Larry Flynt, Arriana Huffington (who I mostly agree with), Gallagher, D.L. Hughley, Gary Coleman (WTF?! is the Gooch going to be his chief of staff. Is Webster going for the senate?!) Kirk Cameron and whatever other rich freak happens to have $4,000 lying around the house. This is a mockery of Democracy........a warped and twisted fiasco to weird to be real.

But, sadly, it is all too real.

6. I'd say off Broadway first. This is not the fucking movies.
and by the way where is the outrage about the "Hollywood" types keeping thier mouths shut. Stop using celebrity. What a bunch of hypocrites. Also didn't you love the way the media built it up that Arnold, "who by the way will probably announce that he wouldn't run", Very bushlike PR, and then he comes out on the fucking jay leno show and announces his candidacy.

16. All the freepers whine about it...
They complain that the liberal actors of Hollywood shouldn't voice their opinion because they are actors and should not comment on political matters. They ignore the fact that actors still have every right to speak their mind about issues. Basically, they tell them to "shut up".
But oh, when a REPUBLICAN actor says something, well, then it's aok with them! :eyes:
I was meaning to show that there are double standards going on here.

23. OH MY GOD. I'm embarassed to say I did not even
make that connection. Jesus, where the hell is Bill O'Reilly now? Someone really needs to challenge him to speak up and take a stand about this. According to him, entertainers aren't even qualified to have first amendment rights, but now their party has an entertainer running for public office.

ARRRRRGGGGGG!!! I am so sick of these repuke double standards. Too bad democrats are not the miserable self-loathing pieces of shit that repuke political strategists are or we would be shouting about this hypocrisy from the rooftops. We're just to busy living our lives and trying to make the world a better place.

If you have 100 dollars and it cost 200 dollars, something has to give,so it should be interesting what he takes out of the pot.

12. Considering the budget is set for next year and there will be
deficits miles long...aside from raising the sales tax,
getting more money from Indian casinos, repealing Prop 13,
putting in state parking meters everywhere, raising
licenses and permits for owning exotic animals...:-)

there isn't much a new governor can do. He'd essentially
be a lame duck with the executive powers and executive
bathroom key.

15. yes but no one will say it
It would be political death for the one
who ran on this.

I think this must go through an initiative.

If anyone can point me at a campaign to do so
I would love it. Long time homeowners and
commercial owners would fight tooth and nail
against this.

I would be great for the state as a whole.

17. Don't we have ENOUGH businessmen in politics?
It appears that Arnold has a better track record than Georgie--but it could also be that has better taste in financial advisors. If he wants to get into politics, let him start at the bottom--a councilperson or something. He's not qualifed to start so near the top. Like Bloomberg, Flynt, and Perot, his only real qualification is that he can afford to run. At least Huffington knows a thing or two about politics.

21. Actually, we don't have REAL businesmen in office. What we
have are "dealers", "brokers", "financiers", and even corrupt, crony capitalists.

We would be much better off if we had real businessmen in office. You know the ones. They built a business, grew the business, hired people, trained people, dealt with customers/clients, coped with economic downturns and figured out how to survive until the next upturn. They are the REAL businessmen.

Unfortunately, that's not to get ahead in the USA today so we have darn few of them left.

25. He couldn't string a simple declarative sentence together

speaking with Matt Lauer this morning. Didn't know anything about
schools, Education matters. When asked what his solution would be
for the problems that plague California, all he could say was
"I will bring people together". When asked how to remedy the exit
of business from California, he said "I will bring people together".
There are only two ways to solve the problems of California--
raise Taxes, and cut services. "Arnie" knows nothing about Economics.
Maybe he should run for President!

Whoever buys the GOP BS that government is a business must think that public education is some dirty liberal scheme.
It was W's schtick too. At least NYC (unlike US and possibli California) got a successful businessman. And you know what? IWe are still in the crapper.

guys like him always have business managers. Always.

I'm amazed anyone would ever think he would be a good candidate.

If this is the great republican mind at work, then I just laugh at them.

It's a joke. At least Jesse Ventura had some experience in his local politics before he ran for governor.

Arnie should stock to managing his plastic surgery and his muscles.
