Court martial begins for anti-war soldier

FORT STEWART, GA (AP) -- The court martial for a solder who left his unit in Iraq opened today at Fort Stewart with motions.

The defense asked to meet with Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejia of the Florida National Guard off the military post.

The judge did NOT immediately rule on the motion.

Only motions are expected to be heard today. A military panel to hear the case will be brought in tomorrow.

The 28-year-old from Miami Beach said he did NOT want to fight for what he calls an "oil-driven war."

He is demonstrating more courage than the Dem leaders who voted for the IWR in 2002.
