AP Diplomatic Writer

Vice Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offered the assurance in a meeting Tuesday with Powell at the State Department, a senior U.S. official said Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity

Nevertheless, despite appeals from Bush and Powell for restraint, Israeli troops pushed deeper Thursday into the Rafah refugee camp in search of gunmen and weapons smugglers. Seven Palestinians were killed and several buildings demolished.
