MSNBC: Schwarzenegger: ‘I’m a uniter’
Aug. 8 — In his first network television interview since declaring his candidacy for governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger declared he would be “a uniter, not a divider” if elected and vowed to improve the state’s economy to stop the exodus of businesses. But the actor, who is coming under increased scrutiny after vaulting to the front of the Republican pack seeking to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis in the Oct. 7 recall election, offered no specifics on his plan to “overhaul the economic engine” in his appearance on NBC’s “Today” show.

Hmm "a uniter, not a divider". I thought Rove was going to FedEx him a copy of the 2004 play book. Guess he sent the 2000 version by mistake.

21. Good grief!
Is he going to blame California's economic woes on some collusion between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein? Will those pesky French find a new enemy as they present the most robust competition for California's share of the American wine market?

Why do I sense that we will hear recycled three-year-old campaign rhetoric?

6. I saw it Lauer couldn't get a word in edgewise
He literally had to try 4 or 5 times to get another question out. Arnold just kept talking and talking which is not a smart thing to do for any politician. He did manage to not actually answer any of the questions.

IT was quite bad.

14. Saw it , too
Couldn't believe the way he talked over Matt. Answered (not really) the questions he wanted to, then, when Matt wanted to know if he was going to release his tax returns he suddenly "couldn't hear him". When Matt said goddbye, the Arn could hear him then, of course.

Horrible interview. Go away now, Arnold.

9. MSNBC Headline was great
Said Aw-nold was "vague" then there was a link to a WP article about how his actual policies are a mystery.

If Aw-nold wins, it will be because our media is celebrity-obsessed, and he only needs to ride the wave for two months. If there were more time to actually get to what he does or doesn't stand for, he'd be gone.

IF Davis' people were smart, they would have challenged him to a debate the day he announced. Aw-nold would have put them off, but that makes the coverage focus on the fact that he won't debate, NOT that he's a celebrity.

Why doesn't hire me on their campaign?

19. I wondered about debates too
seems like it would be smart for Davis to hold a debate, but I bet they think it's politically unwise to give any "legitimacy" to this debacle of a recall.

However, it would be good to see an experienced politician discuss the issues with his Hollywood "opponent".

Is how embaressed all the others would be if Davis does win; he got quite a few votes last time. And that was against a REAL political opponent!

15. Great - Thomas Dewey on steroids
Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 01:45 PM by hatrack
Somebody once summed up Dewey's '48 campaign neatly, given the meaningless platitudes which made up almost every bit of his speeches.

"America is a beautiful country."

"Agriculture is important."

"Our rivers are full of fish."

"Our future lies before us."

I don't think Arnie's going to get away with mouthing the same kinds of empty, bullshit phrases, as he's trying to do now - "Governor for all Californians," "Uniter, not a divider," and so on. Didn't work for toothbrush Tom in 1948, either.

Oh, btw, Dewey did actually say the last of the four quotes listed above.

23. Not quite
I read he terms himself a "compassionate libertarian".

This uniter/divider stuff is such crap. Look no further than the boy king for the proof.

But hey Arnie's a fun guy. What a blast to have the Terminator as Governor. He'll be able to balance the budget by magic without raising taxes or cutting services. He'll spew a bunch of crap for the next eight weeks. The media will love it and, poof, he'll be elected.

The immaturity of the political and governing process is truly astounding.

22. Maybe Arnold really is a "uniter"
Heck, he has already "united" most DU members with Rush Limbaugh and his dittoheads -- with both groups sharing a common disdain for Arnold and his candidacy. Hmmm, he is opposed by both the Left and the Right. I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing for a candidate.

24. And I'll unite Republicans against any Democrat I disagree with
When Republicans speak of unity, they mean beating others into submission. They don't mean talking to people of various views and trying to work from the center out to achieve concensus.

28. Ahnuld's received more coverage than the other candidates combined
California Democrats better wake up and take this guy very seriously.

He may be a mediocre actor, but he's a very rich and popular mediocre actor, nor would he be the first mediocre actor Californians have elected to the governorship.

On the other hand, I'm really hoping to see him in a debate with Gary Coleman.

33. Please don't misunderestimate Ahnuld
He's a bodybuilder. And a very rich man. He isn't stupid, regardless of the image he puts forth; he's a smart investor who wouldn't waste his time in politics if he didn't think he could win.

His acting isn't anything to write home about, although I did like his performance in Twins, but he's doing a great job of trading on his film cliche's and even the SNL parodies ("Ah'm gon to pump YOU uhp, Sahcrahmento") to generate media shorts. He's played that part perfectly.

WAKE UP PEOPLE, or he's going to ride his film persona right into the governor's mansion while you're busy talking about what a lousy actor he is.
