Authorities evacuated 2,000 villagers after a tanker truck loaded with toxic benzene overturned on a rural road in southern China, local officials said yesterday.

Rain washed about 10 tons of crude benzene into nearby streams after the tanker truck overturned before dawn on Wednesday along a narrow road in Qingwan township in the Guangxi region, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Several rivers, including the Lin River, were "seriously contaminated," Xinhua cited Ke Liping, an environmental official in Maoming, a city in nearby Guangdong province, as saying.
