against these abuses. It drew about 35 people and 4 counterprotestors according to his estimates, and an asshole local radio show host who tried to smear him throughout and after the rally. I wish there was more from the bigger cities, but where I'm at, we tried and we got some good coverage.

10. We really need to get some old hippy protestors
to show us the best & most efficient ways of disseminating the info on where & when to demonstrate, and how to get this information to the best people

That is, if we can pull them away from their stocks trading and board meetings

17. I assure you
Not all of us old hippies attend board meetings. This one is unemployed in Bushco's economy. Never traded a stock in my life.

But I have demonstrated many times.

That said, a catalyst is needed to create an effective movement. Be one by starting one yourself. Others will follow.

Pick a date (June 5th, hint hint), a time, and a place that is centrally located. Talk to others who are like-minded and get them to agree to help organize. Put up posters around town. Write letters to local newspapers. Call TV and radio stations.

We have to become the new media, it's really that simple.

For the life of me I can't figure out how you guys changed history for what was TRULY GOOD yet SO MANY of you are still alive today and we've had Bush with 70+ points approval ratings!
(I'm NOT saying you're old - making the point you're still HERE)

I've been wondering where you've all gone!
I knew there were SOME left -- but where was the question!

We've MISSED You!

And now more than ever -- WE NEED YOU!!!

There's POOP for protest here in my city, and I cannot afford to travel for June 5th :(

So -- can anyone help me with info on how to organize a rally, where would be the best spot (ie general Federal Building? Other more visible venue?), what kind of legal permits are needed, how to advertise to the most likely people to attend?
Oh - a THOUSAND more questions!

*edited to ask the advice :)

50. This old hippie chick is still hanging in there.
It took a long time. Six years or so - and about 58 THOUSAND American deaths, to close down the Vietnam War, and who knows how many Vietnamese civilians to factor in, as well.

There is SUCH a state of denial now, compounded, I suspect, by the critical matter - to some - of SAVING FACE. NOBODY wants to admit they've been had. From the White House with the Chalabi business and the WMDs and the completely brainless and illconceived misconstruction of this war strategy and the hot potato of who's to blame for the prisoner torture scandal. It's everywhere. And those who supported this, with few exceptions, are loathe to admit they were suckered in, or that they were wrong, or that they showed such poor judgment, or that they were patsies, or that they got played. I mean, the bone marrow of this bunch is the swaggering John Wayne movie cowboy and his rootin' tootin' six gun out to shoot the bad guys, and nobody tells 'em what to do or how to do it. Just really simple. Simplistic. Good guys versus bad guys. You're with us or agin' us. Wanted Dead or Alive. Just stale, pathetic crap left over from the black and white TV days where the hero always went with his gut over anybody else's advice. Probably proof that young bush spent a lot of his time as a youngster in front of the TV, watching "Maverick" and "The Rifleman" and "Gunsmoke" and "Rawhide" and so forth. NOBODY wants to admit they've been played. Especially when they fancy themselves as players of the first order.

We're still around. I've seen, read, and heard lots of grumbling from people who wonder WHY WE'RE NOT OUT MARCHING IN THE STREETS. I'd be there in a flash if somebody set something up here in L.A. I've kept my protest signs from the last rounds in the run-up to war.

but still, what the heck happened to them all?
--the hippies I mean;, I don't care about the Yup's. they have nothing to offer with these recent troubles... IMO of course

It seemed, to me at least, there were SO very many of them, yet now we hear only hear of a handful.
I mean there HAD to be great numbers, surely a handful didn't change the course of U.S. history!

Does or could *active* activism die off with age?

This has me extremely puzzled...

Anti-war protesters wore black hoods and chanted "Bush go home" outside a hotel where former President George Bush was attending a fund-raising dinner Tuesday for his son's re-election campaign.

About 200 demonstrators from the Stop the War Coalition action group took part in the protest at the Landmark Hotel in central London, which was heavily guarded by police.

Protesters chanted "Resist, resist, Daddy Bush is a terrorist" and held signs with slogans such as "End the torture" and "Iraq for Iraqis," as rush-hour commuters converged on nearby Marylebone subway station.

that in polls the public is saying that the war was a mistake and not worth the losses.

Too many protests here could backfire. The warmongers would dig in that much more, they would drag out the ole 'hippie' propaganda. They will listen to the polls eventually, that is what is going to count.

Edited on Sat May-22-04 03:43 PM by Iceburg
Pressure grows to cancel Bush visit
20/05/2004 - 18:31:32
http://breaking.examiner.ie/2004/05/20/story148554.html
Further pressure was heaped on the Government today to cancel George Bush’s upcoming visit to Ireland in the wake of the latest killings in Iraq.

The US President is due to arrive at Shannon on June 25 and stay overnight at Dromoland Castle, Co Clare, during an EU/US summit.

All political parties made statements in the Irish parliament today on the current situation in Iraq.
...
Green Party TD John Gormley described the entire war as an “unmitigated disaster” and claimed it was sowing the seeds for further terrorism.
...

Labour TD Michael D Higgins said protesting when Mr Bush visited the country was the only chance Irish people had to voice their outrage.
He described the most recent violence as “appalling” and said by staying silent Ireland was “degraded and shamed.”
...
“We do not want the blood of innocent Iraqis on our hands,” he said.

“The clearest way of sending this message is to cancel the visit of George Bush in June and not give him the opportunity to use it as photo-call for the US elections.”

The IAWM is organising a demonstration in Dublin on June 25 and a second at Dromoland Castle on May 26.

31. Protesters demand Iraq pullout - News24 - UK
London - Hundreds of anti-war protesters marched through London on Saturday, calling for occupying forces to be withdrawn from Iraq and an end to the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

The march was headed by a number of demonstrators dressed as soldiers who pretended to torture other protesters wearing black hoods, in scenes reminiscent of photographs of the alleged torture of Iraqi prisoners by US soldiers.

The activists were watched by a strong contingent of police as they began walking alongside the River Thames in central London.

"We are protesting about the shocking abuses in Iraq and call for the withdrawal of the illegal aggressor forces," said Kate Hudson, a spokesperson for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

32. Shrine fears spark anti-US rallies in Lebanon - TT
AP , BEIRUT, LEBANON
Sunday, May 23, 2004,Page 6

Tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims, mostly supporters of the militant group Hezbollah, turned out in Beirut Friday in a massive show meant as a strong warning to the US against attacking holy sites in Iraq.

Wearing white shrouds symbolizing their readiness to die in defense of the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in southern Iraq, the demonstrators, estimated at more than 200,000, shouted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" as they marched in Beirut's teeming southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold.

A protest march by about 5,000 Shiites in Bahrain led to clashes with police in which at least three people were injured by shotgun pellets and 10 treated for tear gas inhalation. Later Friday, the Bahraini king fired the interior minister over the clashes, saying the demonstration should have been allowed.

Edited on Sun May-23-04 06:06 AM by Hekate
We marched every Saturday for months and months until shortly after the invasion and war began. Now we have Arlington West up every Sunday since Veterans Day last November, and we'll be here on Memorial Day too. Plant one in your community in a high-traffic area.

The most pressing need RIGHT NOW is to convince people that George Bush has got to go back to Crawford, and that won't happen by burning flags and yelling, however satisfying those exercises may be. Many of my peace-marching friends started working on Democratic candidates' campaigns back when there were still nine of them in the running, and now, no matter who they fell in love with early on they are supporting Kerry.

God only knows what will happen if Bush is re-selected this November, but for now we have work to do and we are doing it.

Edited to add that if Bush shows up within a hundred miles of us, we'll have a posse there to greet him with enthusiasm. ;-)

47. I'm going to the L.A. demo!
The March 20 demo in L.A. was bigger than the previous one and I know the June 5 one will be even larger.

Yesterday, I picked up flyers and posters about the June 5 demo at the L.A. ANSWER office.

I hope to see all L.A. DUers there!

42. Protests require press coverage
Unlike in the 60s&70s, unlike in the rest of the world, the United States currently has a government controlled press and media. The government has learned how to deal with demonstrations; by denying them publicity. They are confined to "free speech" zones while cameras are elsewhere. There is "equal time" coverage of staged counter-demonstrations. And there is a focus on lunatic fringe elements of what ever demonstrations that are covered. The tactics of the past cannot be used to confront the realities of today.

43. Sad, but true
I organized the anti-rallies in the Fall of 2002/Spring 2003 in Lexington KY. We also had a rally last March.

But basically, we have been pretty lame. It is ironic that now that the public would be more behind us, we are silent.

I guess I need to get the posse together.

48. We've been holding protests in Tulsa
Edited on Sun May-23-04 04:55 PM by hippywife
We were out for the one year anniversary, Tax Day, and Mission Accomplished anniversary.

We're going to be out again on June 5th and once a month thereafter. Some of us may organize to stand our corner every weekend.

Andrew Rice of September Families for Peaceful Tomorrows said something to me that I try to pass on to everyone with regard to protesting: The powers that be expect and can largely dismiss protests held in DC, NYC, and LA. It's harder to dismiss protests when they begin occurring in middle America.

Get together your peace rallies no matter how small your town or group. Together we all make one large, loud voice for change!!

We have to keep the pressure on and building!

Thanx for the pics, Iceburg...truly inspiring! :)
