PARIS, France -- At least six people have been killed when part of a concrete-and-metal ceiling collapsed at a new passenger terminal at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport, officials said.

Rescuers were searching for survivors in the rubble at Terminal 2E, where passengers were waiting for flights Sunday morning, Reuters reported.

Slabs of concrete and metal came crashing down from the ceiling over an area of about 50 yards (meters) at about 7 a.m. (0500 GMT/1 a.m. ET).

The cause wasn't immediately known but there was no immediate sign of foul play, The Associated Press reported.

A spokesman with the Paris Fire Department told CNN that six people were killed and three others injured.
