Iraq Setbacks Change Mood in Washington
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/latimests/20040523/ts_latimes/iraqsetbackschangemoodinwashington&cid=2026&ncid=1480

WASHINGTON — President Bush (news - web sites) is hearing increasingly bleak warnings that the U.S. occupation of Iraq (news - web sites) is heading for failure — from Republican and Democratic members of Congress, current and former officials and even some military officers still on active duty.

But so far, at least, the White House says it hasn't heard anything that makes it want to change course. snip

"I believe we are absolutely on the brink of failure," retired Marine Gen. Joseph P. Hoar, a former commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "We are looking into the abyss. We cannot start soon enough to begin the turnaround."

"If the current situation persists, we will continue fighting one form of Iraqi insurgency after another — with too little legitimacy, too little will and too few resources," warned Larry Diamond, a former advisor to the U.S. occupation authority in Baghdad. "There is only one word for a situation in which you cannot win and you cannot withdraw: Quagmire."

3. Whatever that means --
"We are looking into the abyss. We cannot start soon enough to begin the turnaround."

"And as you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."

-- Nietzche

In this case, I expect it means that the disarray in Iraq is likely to spawn terrorist attacks on the USA. Thank you, Mr. Bush*.

4. Right now, the story is rated 2.75
You rate it by going to the link, then to the end of the story, where the scale is 1 to 5.

Could this be the collapse of Bush? I don't think he will change course-he's too stupid to do that. I do fear that his disasterous policies will result in more terrorist actions against Americans.

9. why ..........
Why do "Republican and Democratic members of Congress, current and
former officials and even some military officers still on active duty" hate America?

10. Simple....
not enough freedom fries. Without the daily dose of freedom toast for breakfast and freedom fries the rest of the day .... chaos ensues. Sad to note that the wingers will say anything to justify thier worldview or argument. Economy great ...we need a tax cut. Economy bad... we need a tax cut.

11. We lost this war a long time ago.
Another VietNam. Rummy et al trying to convince the American public that we're winning when in fact it was lost a long time ago. Just because stupid Bush will believe anything Rummy tells him doesn't mean the American public will. All the high tech weaponry in the world doesn't mean you'll win a war. Taxpayer money down the drain.

12. "heading for"??? "on the brink"???
these guys are a bit behind the times.

the occupation is already a disaster. the war was a disaster. it was wrong.

The antiwar folks have all been proven 100 percent correct.

The right wingers and neocons should stop whining and get over their disastrous decisions, their disastrously bad judgment in supporting Bush's war.
