This headline, this announcement, would not have lost a thing between now and the convention. This could have been played as a "will he or won't he" story, complete with mystery and suspense and rumors - people saying "what is that Kerry up to?" - A GOOD THING, and instead, the media generated by the speculation will now die. One less reason to talk about Kerry.

He just gave up free, pliable media.
