Bomb Threat Found On Plane Headed To Boston
Officials Evacuate Jet In Nashville

POSTED: 5:57 pm EDT May 27, 2004
UPDATED: 6:15 pm EDT May 27, 2004

BOSTON -- An American Airlines plane en route from Dallas to Boston was diverted after officials found a written bomb threat onboard.

Flight 306 landed safely in Nashville, and according to reports, a note was found in a bathroom of the MD80 jet claiming that there was a bomb in the cargo hold. The plane left Dallas at about 1:45 p.m. and was supposed to arrive in Boston at 6:30 p.m.

The pilot requested an unscheduled landing in Nashville and was originally denied a landing because Air Force One was on the ground there. The plane finally landed at about 5 p.m. after Air Force One was moved.

The plane has been evacuated and officials are searching the plane.

NewsCenter 5 and TheBostonChannel.com will have more information when it becomes available.

6. We don't care if there's an emergency...AF-1 is here, go around
That bothers me more than anything. An inflight emergency and they were denied landing cause of AF1? Sheesh...

At least someone thought it through and allowed them to land.

7. Our local news said the pilot was first told to land
in Chattanooga but asked to land in Nashville and that was granted. Two different dogs have been taken on board and hit on something. More later.

4. That's just horrible
No one should be forced to land in Tennessee. Arkansas maybe, but Tennessee?

Authorities investigating diverted plane
American flight lands after threatening note is found

Updated: 6:36 p.m. ET May 27, 2004

Authorities were investigating an American Airlines flight diverted to Nashville on Thursday after a note was found that said an explosive was on board. The plane was emptied of passengers and has been searched by law enforcement officials.

American Airlines Flight 306, an MD-83 on a flight from Dallas to Boston, was diverted to Nashville after the note was discovered in one of the plane's lavatories. The pilot requested permission to land at Nashville International Airport and was asked to proceed to Chattanooga because Air Force One was in the Nashville area for President Bush's trip.

The pilot again requested to land in Nashville and was given clearance to land. The plane was escorted by fighter jets and moved to a remote part of the airport. It landed safely at 4:36 p.m. ET.

The note was found by a flight attendant who brought it to the attention of the pilot. He then declared an emergency. The plane was being searched by canine teams and the investigation was being turned over to the FBI.

Officials at the North American Aerospace Defense Command confirmed for NBC that two F-16 fighter jets were diverted from “irregular air patrols” to provide an escort for the American plane.

The officials would not say whether the F-16s had been assigned to Air Force One.

MSNBC's Jay Blackman and Terry Pickard contributed to this report.
