Sen. Lugar Calls for New U.N. Resolution on Iraq
Sen. Lugar Calls for New U.N. Resolution on Iraq
Sun August 10, 2003 11:38 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States should seek a new U.N. resolution on Iraq to help secure greater international support in reconstruction and peacekeeping efforts, a key Senate Republican said on Sunday.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar of Indiana said a U.N. resolution would also provide "greater legitimacy" to commercial contracts in Iraq.

"I think we need to seek a resolution or more resolutions from the United Nations to give more legitimacy, more reason why other nations will come to the floor -- specifically India, perhaps Germany," he told reporters.

1. No!!!!!!!
America and Britain started the whole thing and Poland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, and any other country who supported the WAR should be RESPONSIBLE for this!!! India opposed the war along with Germany, France, and Russia, and most of the WORLD for that matter!!! I OPPOSE any new resolution!

2. While I see your point, I disagree
we have created a quagmire. Stability is important. And stability will never happen when we have total control of the rebuilding/policing/governing. Greater UN Support changes the entire landscape of what is going on right now. It is the only short-term way to lower the amount of deaths and casualties that are happening (civilian and military) on a daily basis.

The administration has consistently danced away from this kind of solution, BECAUSE they want to completely control Iraq. They will only acquiesce to Lugar's approach if they are forced to because they are so desperate. Rummy and Wolfie will never admit their mistakes and will never admit to being so desparate. I would be surprised if this got any play from the administration.

5. Agreed
Look how the administration is controlling us. I wish the UN would come to our country.

3. I don't think the resolution would sanction the war
It would provide an international framework for dealing with the current reality in Iraq.

Regarding responsibility for the war, I think that the aggressors will have to pay concessions in order to get the antiwar countries to agree to the resolution. I think it would mean less booty for the agressors.

The people paying most of the real cost are the Iraqis, and with more countries involved I think that cost would be reduced.

4. I believe it would have the OPPOSITE effect than what you claim:
"... would also provide "greater legitimacy" to commercial contracts in Iraq ..."

This is not what the world needs, nor what we want.

This war was based on LIES. There is absolutely no way we should be giving this bunch of criminals cover.

I agree that an international framework for helping Iraq now that we destroyed it, is what is needed. But ONLY provided that all Haliburton and other bushco contracts are voided, and anyone even remotely connected to this bunch of criminals in OUR White House is SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITED from participating or bidding on "contracts", and instead, they are presented with and forced to pay the bill of reconstruction.

6. there WILL be that kind of negotiation
Doubtful that all Halliburton's contracts will be cancelled, but the Bushies will have to surrender some of the loot to the more peaceful countries, and probably the Iraqi people will get a bigger slice as well.

The way it is now, there are no such negotiations. Bremer runs the whole show.

7. I disagree
Our primary concern should be the safety of U.S. Troops. They are in a shooting gallery, and getting picked off every day. Bush must go to the U.N. and beg Secretary-General Annan for help.

8. We need a new UN Resolution in Iraq, but not Lugar's
We need to withdraw our troops and our civilian bureaucrats and contractors out of Iraq ASAP. Let the UN Security Council vote to put Iraq under UN mandated administration until such time as free elections can be held and a government is elected.

We have harmed the people of Iraqi long enough, and it is time for us to recognize that we are the criminals in this equation.

The US will oppose anything that will keep American companies from robbing Iraq's resources, or that will put a fundamentalist government in Baghdad.
